hot take: software people are going to regret not unionizing when we could

Vibe-coded software is perfect for TONS of scenarios. Should we vibe code the systems of an airplane? Hell no! Should we vibe code the software of medical devices? Of course no! Should we vibecode a small website for our local group/association? Why not? It's perfect for that.

I'm not saying that coding with LLMs are going to fix this, but you can clearly see why vibe-coded applications are appealing. Screaming that "the code is shit" is not going to change the fact that those people need a digital solution and paying us thousands of dollars is not an option.

Let's be honest, a small city in some countries cannot pay dollarized salaries of a globalized digital economy. We all enjoy our good salaries, but our industry has excluded A LOT of people in need of digital solutions.

There's a whole world of use cases where people in need of tech cannot afford thousands of dollars on it. For most of those use cases average code is more than enough. It doesn't need to scale, it doesn't need to shine, it doesn't need to be great it just need to put some words on an webpage.

What frustrates me about the non-ai coding advocacy is that it tends to be narrow minded to: only artisanal, expert made, good quality code is acceptable. They fail to understand that good software is expensive and therefore completely out of reach for certain communities and countries.

If anything good can come up from LLMs in coding is the ditch of frameworks if favor of stacks closer to the platform itself. On the web landscape I see no reason to keep investing in bloated frameworks when we can be using HTML, WebComponents, modern CSS, etc. shopify.engineering/back-to-native

Coding agents changed what it costs to build mobile apps twice. Here’s why Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin.

"Frequently the failure is not related to AI itself, but rather that companies are terminally bad at running software projects effectively. AI projects are subject to all the failure modes of normal projects plus you can get everything right and then still fail because of the method's novelty." 👏👏👏

"Digital transformation" was the political buzzword through which strategic public functions were transferred to closed, private technological infrastructures in one or two jurisdictions. A de facto privatisation and abdication of sovereignty. With AI, it will get worse than that.

the tragedy is that in-principle access to information was *never* easier. The digital tools available are incredible and cheap - or even "free" (open source). Its a historically significant regression for society to reach such a dystopic point in just a couple of decades.

We had/have the same frustration while trying to explain that LLM outputs are also editorial. That LLMs are trained and programmed to answer in a specific way. Access to information is being monopolized, we are living in dangerous times.

I have a yearly plan of z.ai that I bought in Januay for €36 the whole year. I don't consider my self a heavy user but I do use it 3 or 4 days a week to assist me in some coding tasks (let's say ~20 prompts a week). I have never reached a limit.

We might be heading towards a consolidation. People will still use it and vibe-code but they will think twice before running any AI. There is going to be more up-front thinking and more manual intervention of simple tasks. (No more: "now change the background color to red" kind of prompt)

+1 on this. Vibe Coding is great for exploring and prototyping but doing something that adds business value and/or solves a real problems is a different topic. There is a lot of waste. Prices going up will re-focus software development on what matters.
