On September 3, Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services received a report of an illegally harvested sturgeon.
The caller discovered the remains of a roughly 5-foot-long sturgeon while kayaking along the south shore of the North Saskatchewan River, near Range Road 12, just south of Stony Plain on August 31.
The fish had been gutted, with its head and scutes (bony plates) removed, and appeared to be several days old with signs of scavenging. No tracks were visible along the shore, suggesting it may have been dumped.
The poaching incident is believed to have occurred between August 28 to 31. The individual(s) responsible may still be in possession of the sturgeon’s head and scutes.
⚠️ Sturgeon are a protected species in Alberta. They can live up to 100 years and are extremely slow to mature—females typically do not spawn until they are 20 to 25 years old. Due to their vulnerability, there is a zero allowable catch for sturgeon in the province.
👉 If you have any information related to this incident, please call Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800. Calls are anonymous and, if charges are laid, the information provided may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
