I feel the same way about ghost stories: they’re social memes that keep characters and lessons in alive by existing simultaneously in both history and the present; they aren’t just fun tales for campfires - they’re immortal reminders/warnings of a community’s pride and/or shame.

Prosecutors are extra-immune if they just don't prosecute. In fact, prosecutors who refuse to prosecute rapists because they like the guy cannot be held liable. You don't have a "right" for the state to prosecute your rapist. reason.com/2021/10/13/l...

If you're a reporter asking a candidate to denounce a foreign terrorist group simply because he shares the same religion, you are a gutter bigot of the worst fucking kind. Do they ask Mike Rogers to denounce Christian terrorists like Tim McVeigh, Eric Robert Rudolph and Robert Lewis Dear? No? Huh

Marshall charged 18% on medical bills — more than other Kansas doctors who sued
In reviewing thousands of court documents, the Star found no other medical providers that charged annual interest at 18% or any other specified rate above 12%.

"the left" may have been more outspoken on some fronts, but most women & minorities, even conservative ones, don't want to live in a world where they're constantly subjected to slurs. they too are "woke" without being left at all. 3/

Paul Rosenberg @paulrosenberg.bsky.social · 12m
But this isn't different in kind from what conservatives have argued for in terms of public order (policing speech & conduct to preserve public peace). The difference is simply a different vision of the order that needs to be preserved--an egalitarian one vs a racist/sexist/classist one. 2/

Paul Rosenberg @paulrosenberg.bsky.social · 12m
What all this overlooks is that conservatives have ALWAYS argued for restrictions of speech on moral & public order grounds & liberals have opposed them. SOME folks on the left (and elsewhere on the spectrum) have wanted to limit speech that ACTIVELY contributes to a hostile political environment 1/

Haidt's #bothsides push after 8 years of Bush/Cheney REALLY messed people up, effectively laying down cover for the Tea Party movement & the Trumpism that followed. [It was bad/biased to speak of them honestly.] Him trying to blame "the left" for Trump was the utmost in chutzpah.

Most elected officials are careerists - meaning that if you don’t push them, they’ll take the path of least resistance. Now is the time to be loud & clear about what America needs: A transparent accounting of everything that’s gone wrong, & consequences for those responsible.

Agree with Don. I’d add that the H1 people mostly (in my expc) didn’t *really* think the right cared about threats to free speech. Instead the H1 folks felt status threat, objected to the way DEI was being handled, and didn’t know how to say it. So they deflected their feelings onto “free speech”

I guess some of these old crop varieties were useful after all!
Diagram shaped a bit like a tree, with broad branches and skinny roots. The top indicates the number of varieties of various crops available from commercial seed suppliers around 1903.
At the bottom are the number of these varieties in storage at the National Seed Storage Laboratory (indicated name change in 2001 to the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation).
For example, the number of tomato varieties went from 408 to 79.
