Our researchers have revealed how the first ever bird to inhabit the Earth could have taken flight. Archaeopteryx left the ground by making two or three powerful leaps with its legs, before flapping into the air. Find out more: www.southampton.ac.uk/biosci/news/... @neilgostling.bsky.social

The results of a study by Erik A. Meilakab et al. show that the earliest bird, Archaeopteryx (a 150-million-year-old reptilian bird), could have reached its minimum sustained flight speed in just two to three jumps, without the energetically demanding single jump of modern birds. 1/2

Archaeopteryx BOUNCED into the air! Our new paper in @devbiol.bsky.social shows the first bird used multiple leaps (like modern crows) to take off, using today’s birds to unlock how flight evolved 150M years ago! 🔗Read more here: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #DinosaurBird #HowFlightBegan
Graphical abstract of the paper showing a drawing of the mechanism Archaeopteryx could have used to take-off.

The title is "How did Archaeopteryx take off?"

There are 3 boxes:

1. Modern birds can leave the ground with a single leap, followed by powerful wing strokes which is a very energetic behaviour

2. A 400g Archaeopteryx, not as 'advanced' as modern birds, could have become airborne by making a jump with a flap, followed by another hump and subsequent flapping to achieve stable flight at 7m/s

3. This low energy take off is used by modern birds when in hurry to take off.

This article in Le Monde about French research in general and the CNRS in particular has a few depressing graphs www.lemonde.fr/sciences/art...
The graph highlights a growing divergence between Germany and France:

* In the mid-1990s, France and Germany spent similar shares of GDP on R&D.
* Germany subsequently increased its R&D investment by about 1 percentage point of GDP.
* France’s R&D effort remained largely stagnant.
* By 2023, Germany spends 3.15% of GDP on R&D compared with 2.18% in France, a gap of nearly 1 percentage point of GDP.
* France is also well below the OECD average (2.93%).

The figure therefore illustrates that France has fallen behind both Germany and the OECD average in R&D intensity over the past three decades.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.
