My new ANR project has officially started yesterday! #MECHAMORPH will unravel some secrets of the evolutionary success of #snakes! We will look at head and skull shapes and their multiple functions using an interdisciplinary approach. Stay tuned! Special thank to my brother for his killer logo 💚🐍

Archaeopteryx BOUNCED into the air! Our new paper in @devbiol.bsky.social shows the first bird used multiple leaps (like modern crows) to take off, using today’s birds to unlock how flight evolved 150M years ago! 🔗Read more here: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #DinosaurBird #HowFlightBegan
Graphical abstract of the paper showing a drawing of the mechanism Archaeopteryx could have used to take-off.

The title is "How did Archaeopteryx take off?"

There are 3 boxes:

1. Modern birds can leave the ground with a single leap, followed by powerful wing strokes which is a very energetic behaviour

2. A 400g Archaeopteryx, not as 'advanced' as modern birds, could have become airborne by making a jump with a flap, followed by another hump and subsequent flapping to achieve stable flight at 7m/s

3. This low energy take off is used by modern birds when in hurry to take off.
