Joint Statement from The Reconciliation Action Group and Reverend Tony Snow Residential School Denialism Books in Alberta Libraries #ECM #TRC #TreatyPartners #Treaty6 #Treaty7 #Treaty8 #MMIP #MMIWG2S
Yellow background with black text on states Public Statement: Residential School Denialism Book in Alberta Libraries. Joint Statement from
The Reconciliation Action Group and Reverend Tony Snow
Bottom half of slide has a picture of a grass area with the orange flags representing the murdered children buried at Residential school yards with stone brickwork in background of a building.
Yellow background with orange line on the top and bottom, the bottom text notes @Reconciliation_Action_Group Black text in the middle reads:
Our statement today is to bring attention to the deeply concerning rise of hate and Residential School denialism in this province and beyond. We are appalled that libraries across Treaty 6, 7 and 8 territories are carrying a hate speech book written for the denialism movement titled ‘Grave Error: How The Media Misled Us (and the Truth about Residential Schools) by Tom Flanagan.

If the library policies dictate that it does not carry books platforming Holocaust denialism (a crime in Canada per the Criminal Code (Section 319(2.1)) that prohibits the willful promotion of antisemitism by condoning, denying, or downplaying the Holocaust in public, where convictions can lead to imprisonment for up to two years) then why is this book not facing the same standard?
Yellow background with orange line on the top and bottom, the bottom text notes @Reconciliation_Action_Group Black text in the middle reads:
This book actively denies the genocide perpetuated against Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island, printing multiple false statements regarding the children murdered in residential schools. Residential school denialism should meet the same standards as Holocaust denialism. If it is not, the door is opened for more books like this reinventing history and covering up its atrocities. Residential school survivors are still living and sharing their firsthand witness testimony of the horrors many around them did not survive. The descendants of residential school survivors have been living with intergenerational trauma just the same as the descendants of Holocaust survivors.

Residential School denialism is the same as Holocaust denialism. It centers hate of the victim and downplays or denies the atrocities that happened. It places the onus of ‘proof’ on the survivors and blames the media for spreading ‘lies’ when reporting actual events.

Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ People here in Canada. Please take a few minutes today to reflect on these people, their lives and how we can value them more. This incredible photo is by Amber Bracken.
The image captures a poignant scene with a rainbow arching across a dark, cloudy sky in the background, contrasting with the somber atmosphere. In the foreground, a red sundress hangs on a wooden cross, positioned amidst a field of wildflowers and tall grasses. The dress, seemingly simple and casual, is illuminated by the warm, golden light, drawing attention to its presence as a symbol of loss and memory. The wooden cross stands tall, its texture aged and weathered. Additional crosses are visible in the background, each bearing garments, suggesting a memorial site. The overall composition evokes feelings of sorrow, remembrance, and quiet reflection. The lighting creates a dramatic effect, with shadows and highlights emphasizing the textures of the fabrics and the roughness of the wooden structures. The spatial arrangement places the viewer close to the foreground cross while hinting at a larger, more extensive memorial in the distance. The dark clouds and rainbow create a striking contrast, symbolizing both sorrow and hope. There are at least six crosses with garments hanging on them.

My cartoon for this week’s @newscientist.com
Two scientists walk through a cluttered old-fashioned science laboratory.

The female scientist says
“Analogue instruments! Paper records! Chalk boards! I thought you'd agreed to modernise the laboratory?”

The male scientist replies
“That's what i'm so excited about: we have moved to cloud-based storage for our data!”

They step out onto a balcony. She says:
“Please tell me you haven't built a library zeppelin”

This is exactly what he has done. It floats across the sky and he adds
“It's got a fax machine!”

Federal judge has ordered the release of Liam Ramos (the bunny hat boy) and his father. A brief and rather remarkable order. Clearly written to be shared widely, so please do. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
Ultimately, Petitioners may, because of the arcane United States immigration system, return to
their home country, involuntarily or by self-deportation. But that result should occur through a more
orderly and humane policy than currently in place.

Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.

The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive—because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about “Western civilization,” while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.
