At this time of year, I spend an inordinate amount of time watching the flowering Ivy in my Cambridgeshire garden. It's buzzing with pollinators, such as hoverflies, bees, butterflies, and wasps. One of today's highlights was a European Hornet (Vespa crabo) with Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris) prey.

Red Grouse should be a national treasure. Instead, they're gunned down from the sky in the name of 'sport'. The grouse shooting season opens today. Lines of guns will be waiting for beaters to drive terrified Red Grouse into the air, so their clients can shoot as many as possible before lunch.

On this day in 1955, the Russell-Einstein Manifesto was made public. Philosopher Bertrand Russell and physicist Albert Einstein had been working on this statement since the 1945 atomic bombings in Japan. It made clear that a nuclear war would likely lead to the extinction of humanity. #History #OTD
It was signed by 11 people, all Nobel laureates. The text of the manifesto included the sentence:

“Here, then, is the problem which we present to you, stark and dreadful, and inescapable: Shall we put an end to the human race: or shall mankind renounce war?”

According to the Center for American Progress, the manifesto fueled the non-proliferation movement of the era and encouraged massive demonstrations against nuclear weapons.A meme of the Russel-Einstein Manifesto, quoting the document:
"There lies before us, if we choose, continual progress in happiness, knowledge, and wisdom. Shall we, instead, choose death, because we cannot forget our quarrels? Remember your humanity, and forget the rest. If you can do so, the way lies open to a new Paradise. If you cannot, there lies before you the risk of universal death."
