Alert to Canadian Academics: The parliamentary committee report on criteria for grants (i.e. EDI) is out. It’s not good. So not a time to get too comfortable with how things are going here compared to elsewhere. Need to push back on this. EDI makes for better science. It’s not a tradeoff

I think it's ill-advised and anti-democratic to introduce an omnibus bill, cite a crisis, and rush major changes to labour and environmental law. It's going to provoke aggressive resistance and risks, ironically, slowing down the projects the government is so keen on. It's going to be a huge mess.

I recall friends across ridings voting for local Liberals to get Carney into the PMO. If you, like them, were voting strategically to block the Conservatives but didn't vote for this new wave of privatization, SPEAK UP! There is always more than one way to strengthen Canada.

#Winnipeg this is highly relevant to us as well. My Edmonton family doctor pal who does street medicine shared the findings with me over supper last year. Solutions to homelessness cannot be making life even harder for people who are living it. We need to do better.

It's hard to overstate how important #GloriaSteinem has been to me and my feminism. She refused so many social rules of her era to do the work she knew was important. Solidarity was her foundation, walking a different path than many white feminists with platforms at that time.

An idea I heard after Trump started insulting Canada & putting tariffs into place: A #Canada is that a strong, liberal democracy is a threat to the authoritarian future sought by Project 2025 types in the US Republican party. Economic threats and tariffs make sense in this frame.

If Canada gives up the ability to regulate digital platforms in the name of regulatory "alignment" with the United States, in exchange for lowering tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles, it's difficult to overstate how much of a catastrophic defeat that would be for us.

I'm in Calgary for their folk music festival, but sadly hiding inside d/t wildfire smoke. Two weeks ago, extreme heat ruined Winnipeg folk fest. 2025, Winnipeg FF was extreme smoke. 2024, Calgary's was. I mourn summer as I knew it.
