One of those increasingly rare days when, on arriving in my office, I have been able to take a breath and admire the view, which is as uplifting as ever.

A happy conclusion to a gruelling day. The Aare washes off all the gremlins - and it's never been so warm! (That's less good)

Spotted this morning: the fingers of the person who scanned Rowe's edition of Titus. Hello, helpful hand! 👋

Got to do some fun sharing of research on theatre broadcasts - about immersion, constructing gender and technological biases for racial representation - in Exeter and Bath last week, for #ShakespeareBirthdayWeek #ExeterShakespeareFestival. Some great questions from audiences!

We drove up the M5 and I was struck by the majesty of the industrial landscape at Avonmouth. Something awe-inspiring - beauty in ugliness.

Terrible photo, I know, but it's the best I could manage to capture tonight's moon halo (peer at the outer edges of the photo and spot the ring). Something to do with reflection of light on ice crystals in the upper atmosphere, I'm told. In short: magic.

Thanks to everyone who supported my fundraiser for St Petrock's yesterday. It was quite the adventure! Exeter residents: if you'd like to fundraise for the charity, it's simple - see stpetrocks.org.uk/give-help/fu....

It's tomorrow! Weather looks okay-ish for this time of year - definitely worse if you're homeless than just cycling for the homeless. Almost final call: who will chip in for my fundraiser for Exeter's homeless charity?

Rail traveller alert: 20% off interrail passes until 3 July, for travel after 1. September. Might get myself a pass to be able to go to Verona for WSC by train next year! Still not as cheap as flying, but so much more fun and sustainable, with ability to include a couple of exciting stopovers.

At #Markingwalk destination my reward for a really productive time marking in the best office i could find. The flavour is tiramisù, the sea is cold and the feet rather tired. Still on final bit of Henry Green.

I've now switched to Henry Green, a real blast from the past (I once was going to write a book about Green). In the distance, Exmouth. At this end, the seawall in Dawlish Warren. Onward through the wood over clifftops to Dawlish #MarkingWalk

Time for a short break in the progress of today's #MarkingWalk: need to appreciate that tide going out and refresh the suntan lotion. Deep in ballads still.

Help, friends! I am trying to find the correct English term for what in German dramatic criticism is called a 'retardierendes Moment': the slowing of the action before the climax. Any dramatic tempo specialists out there? Am tearing my hair out, especially when I find this kind of definition:
Mathematical formula for a 'retarding plotpoint', in "The Drama considered as a dynamic program. An analogous comparision and the development of a metamodel to structurize story lines." Dipl. Math. It's all so depressing. So, back to basics. What can l do about the things I control that will help? And what is within my ability to influence that will help? #SpheresOfInfluence. Scratching my head, not sure what it is, but there's something meaningful out there. Meanwhile, the sun is out.

Watched Gladiator 2 on Sunday night and today am transcribing Titus' triumphant entrance into Rome. Are we sure that Shakespeare isn't spoofing Gladiator?
Haile Rome, victorious in thy mourning weeds,
Lo as the Barke that hath dischargd his fraught,
Returnes with pretious lading to the bay,
From whence at first shee wayd her anchorage;
Cometh Andronicus, bound with Lawrell bowes,
To resalute his Countrie with his teares,
Teares of true ioy for his returne to Rome,

That's crazy and very interesting! So he's acknowledging that some people will want to study subjects like ancient history, too - but wants to woo people who can't afford US university fees. Also note how "not political" is understood as = pro Israel/not woke. Traditional Unis are "legacy"
