Just watched The 39 Steps and, checking afterwards, was delighted to discover that it *was* Dad’s Army’s John Laurie playing the crofter.

Starting watching the Not Going Out episode that has Nigel Planer playing a version of himself, but has to stop watching as it was far too embarrassing to be funny.

Hell, while I was out of the country, the UK charts went to the dogs. Madison Avenue? Made in London?

It’s been quite a week, with one huge high and a few lows as well; I’ve not played any new guitar since last weekend, so I should really get back to it now.

As CEX inadvertently suggest, James Stewart would have made a great Doctor.

Had a sudden flashback to yesterday afternoon’s seminar on genre, where a student’s mention of mockumentary prompted me to spend two minutes explaining Spinal Tap to twenty 18 year olds (including “goes up to 11” and Stonehenge) then remembering the quote was “if you will, rockumentary”. :-/

The students laughed when I played the BeeGees — one took a photo – but they also understood *why* I was playing the song, and how it genuinely related to the lecture; they answered questions intelligently, and a few came and asked questions about my book at the end. Wonderful!

About to teach the first of two lectures on Tragedy and Hamlet that I was so excited about, and of course now I just feel horribly underprepared and unqualified. :-/

This must happen. The current owners are crooks and cheats and should be forced out of English football.

Forget points deductions, fines, or enforced relegation. Just shut this criminal organisation down, give the rights to the name to the fans, and let the, start a phoenix club in non-league. Scrub all their titles and wipe them out of existence.

Walked to work this morning under the laggard moon, listening to Michael Kitchen read the End of the Affair, ahead of teaching on minor characters in Graham Greene next week.
The moon stands central in an early morning sky, above a skyline featuring Stirling Castle to the right.

Finished Kenan Orhan’s The Renovation today and it ultimately made much more interesting use of the central conceit of an en-suite bathroom portal to a prison cell than it did early on, but the audiobook was hampered by quite a poor narration that misplaced emphases and pauses.

Just saw a post on Threads from a Manchester City fan absolutely livid that his club had devalued everything they’d achieved by cheating, and it’s caused me to question everything I know about (a) City fans; (b) Threads as an astroturfed platform full of tedious fake anecdotes about plane seating.

Decided that I could either get the slides for Wednesday finished tonight, or feel rested for five hours of teaching tomorrow, but not both; chose to try for the latter. Have had an excellent relaxing bath while watching Professor T.

32 years to the day since REM released Monster, and I never liked them quite as much again after that. IIRC, Massive Attack released Protection on the same day, and I must have played that a hundred times as often as Monster.

Is Trafford playing as a reward for hard work at the World Cup despite having little chance of getting a game, or is Pickford’s pre-eminence in doubt now? (I say this as someone who rates Pickford highly, but appreciates that Trafford looks good.)

Another hour or so on the guitar, bashing around at the chords to Fade Into You, I'm Losing More Than I Ever Had, and I Fought in a War. So many songs that (mostly) hadn't even been written when I last tried to play the guitar.

It’s quite funny that Manchester City were known for decades by stupidly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, then they looked to have put all that to bed with the takeover, and now here we are again.
