#Interrail #Sale ends tomorrow, 30 September. See below for details. It's really worth having a look and buying tickets for the year ahead.

Additional info: there's 50% (!!) off unlimited travel for a month, two months, or three months. For an under-27, this works out as £227 for a month; for adults it's £303. Only limit is that it's one trip out of your country and one trip back in. Otherwise unlimited. Seat reservations are separate.

Whenever I've thought that I'd had to give up on something that would never happen again, after a while a similar but even more exciting thing has then come my way. Hope this magic will happen for you, too.

Very excited to have the opportunity to think about #TitusAndronicus as a precursor to/trial run/source of #MeasureForMeasure for this event. So many crossovers: in/justice, consent, rape, forced marriage, revenge, mercy, piety, pleading, beheading, substitutions ... and silence.

Tickets are valid for a *year* from the moment of purchase. That's all of next summer's conference & holiday season... I'm getting some, knowing that the plans I don't have yet will materialise as the year takes its course. 1 month unlimited for £303. Irresistible!

Public service announcement: There's an #interrail sale between now and 30 September. 15% off for adults. A 4-day interrail ticket plus seat reservations works out cheaper than a return ticket to Germany. @lizschafer.bsky.social @profjsanders.bsky.social @starcrossed2018.bsky.social

This scrap fell out of my new/old Wagner. From the review of Jennie Tourel's performance as Carmen at the City Centre Opera Company, I date it to Feb 1944, which is corroborated by a reference to Operation Hailstorm (17-18 Feb 1944) on the reverse. Can anyone suggest which NY paper this is?

Absolutely, there's a lot of Seneca in the play, and a mountain of scholarship, too. What I'm tracking are the things the playwrights and theatregoers might have experienced along the way - spectacles, sounds, smells, sermons, tales told on a long winter night ... not all influences are literary.

Early modern London clearly *is* the answer to every question, @tracelarkhall.bsky.social 😂! I know people brought up their children differently from today, but I doubt Peele was dragged to see people burned at the stake when he was three - at least I hope he wasn't! but the general point stands🙏

Pascale Aebischer (she/her) @pascaleexeter.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Yes, quite. But Foxe only mentions incense for earlier religious ceremonies, not associated with Marian persecutions. Doesn't mean, though, that it wasn't run-of-the-mill in Catholic services and sermons surrounding executions - just not mentioned *specifically*.

Pascale Aebischer (she/her) @pascaleexeter.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
This is great, @mcculloughp.bsky.social ! Means unlikely that there would be an association with Protestant everyday practices or anything to do with scaffolds/executions. I suspect that if entrails were burned onstage, there would have been a highly unpleasant affective 'hit' recalling executions

Pascale Aebischer (she/her) @pascaleexeter.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
(plus a bit of authorship: Peele is not Shakespeare, and this is in the Peele bit, hence universities, not Warwickshire. No way he remembered Marian executions, but audience plausibly did and there must have been accounts of Cranmer's execution still circulating in Oxford in 1570s)

Pascale Aebischer (she/her) @pascaleexeter.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Smell of burning entrails in 1590s = Elizabethan execution of Catholic "traitors" by hanging, disembowelling, burning entrails, quartering. The above plus incense = Marian executions of Protestants with incense and burning people at the stake???

Pascale Aebischer (she/her) @pascaleexeter.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Don't go overboard - it'll disappear into a tiny note. But it's a note that's been going round and round in my head, because it's about whether there's a confessional switch and affective hit when we're told that Alarbus' burning entrails 'like incense ... perfume the sky".

@mcculloughp.bsky.social, do you happen to know about whether 1. incense was used in London/Oxford/Cambridge churches in the 1590s 2. incense was used in funeral services during Mary's reign? (e.g., was incense part of Cranmer's funeral before his execution?) You seem the right person to ask...

When I manage to concentrate among current madness, editing #TitusAndronicus takes me on the wildest, nerdiest rides. Utterly wonderful to have the scope to really think about a single word, in detail, and unpack what it meant to the audience. Today's favourite: entails, when smelling of incense.
