Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

3 degrees of warming may decimate global food production and make South Asia & the Gulf uninhabitable for much of the year but at least Scottish farmers will get a premium rate for their wheat. They might be the only people growing it!

Glasgow to Oban & Fort William coaches are now £4 each way due to the fare cap, with journeys entirely within SPT or HiTrans areas. By train it's £33 to Oban & £38 to Fort William. Big gain for the private bus operators, much of it at the expense of publicly owned Scotrail. Similar journey times too

Let’s try again: I’d like to hear about new research from Scottish historians. Especially ECRs whose work may not get much attention. This is because I have a newspaper column where I publicise new work by Scottish historians! Tell me about your research!

This is flat wrong from Unite. It’s just not true there’s been ‘almost no thought for jobs, skills and national security’. There’s been a huge amount of thought on all these issues and a decision has been made that jobs, skills, and security all benefit from a faster clean energy transition.

Michael Kelly getting airtime on the BBC this morning to call for all protests to be banned in Glasgow - deary me. This was in fact the course of action taken when he was Lord Provost in early 80s - months long bans across all of Strathclyde. As explored in my book! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Plans by the NF for “Smash the IRA” marches in the city in the early 1980s, and resulting counter-demonstrations, met an extreme response from the authorities.
Invoking powers under the Public Order Act 1936, Tory Scottish Secretary George Younger imposed prohibitions on all protest marches, for one month in 1980 and three months in 1981.
68 These applied across the entire Strathclyde Region. The NF began to fall apart not long after this, with most members splintering to John Tyndall’s new formation, the British National Party. The consistent, mass opposition they faced had played a role in their defeat, as had the rise of Thatcher, who effectively stole the ground from beneath their feet.

A wee group of angry balaclava and mask-wearing anti-immigration guys tried to stop the good people of Glasgow showing solidarity with migrants and standing up to racism and fascism. Well, the far right are far outnumbered... #RefugeesWelcome #MigrantsWelcome #NeighboursNotStrangers #Glasgow
Photo of a small group of mostly men wearing black, with masks and balaclavas, surrounded by a Police Scotland cordon in the bottom of the photo, in the foreground. In the background, a very large colourful crowd of people with saltires, trade union banners, and hand-made signs in support of migrants and against racism have turned up to gather to show solidarity, and the far right guys were hoping to thwart that. They didn't.

God, reading about UK politics is depressing. There is a massive, coordinated media attack on Net Zero, led by the RW press (& accelerated by Musk's X). It is *wildly* out of sync with public opinion, but it is slowly working, convincing even labour MPs that the public is more right than it is.

anyone modelled the impact of universal £2 (or indeed, free) buses on intercity trains? Seems mad that an open return Glasgow-Inverness will be £74 on publicly owned rail vs £4 by privately owned coach? Same journey time too.
