And folks are allowed to opt out of celebrating a Christian holiday. Or any holiday really, but especially a religious one. They're allowed to opt out even if the celebration doesn't include elements most Christians would consider sacred. They're allowed even if other folks opt in.

Basically: there's a difference between "not sacred" and "secular." The "right jolly old elf" from "A Visit From Saint Nicholas" is not a sacred character. Folks who venerate saints are not venerating him. But he's still a myth built into and into a Christian holiday.

there is context though. The Korean soldiers who massacred civilians in Jeju, Gwangju, Vietnam, etc. were hardened by Japan's imperial wars and then the Korean War. The majority of the current generation of Korean soldiers have not seen active combat and would have much more compunctions
