Because yeah you can be a jagoff and say I’m gonna put Mint or Arch on a laptop but that doesn’t fully get windows out of our life, you’re sucked in again

So I’ve been trying to approach the idea of divesting from windows less as a “there are alternatives that can theoretically work” angle because that’s passive and hasn’t worked and more an active “what are the friction points in order to be fully free?” angle and yeah this is part of this.

microsoft is so entrenched via directory services, orgs can't divest from them without tearing their own skeleton out. this incentivizes (to some extent) azure for cloud, staying on O365 despite how bad most of it is. add to this how utterly shitty Google enterprise is (fisher price version of MS)

I’ve known people that developed a duster habit and I think it’s the worst one you can have, pure nihilism.

Something I actually have been trying to parse out is how you’d go about finding an alternative to AD DS, like that seems to be the biggest problem for most orgs.

Right but what I mean is I think people are devaluing the strategic nature of their operating system because of raw profitability but it still serves as a launchpad for their more profitable services and nobody is even close to their market share when it comes to personal, non-server computers.

Saying that Azure is the real money maker for Microsoft while Windows is not is on paper true but they still make a shitload off of Microsoft 365 and Windows’ market share does support that.

You’re right about security services and compliance however there’s also a growing push in EU countries to distance themselves from American tech for sovereignty reasons.

I agree that Azure is the money maker although windows is still not insignificant and ultimately Microsoft 365 is the product that is the most interesting here. They’re a services company and Windows does support their services even if they functionally give the OS away.

Appropriate that Microsoft saw a bunch of projects, half of which were non-functional, where nobody checked the code and where their creators had no intent to maintain them, and thought “this is the future”

I’m going to be frank here: except in an ideological, pro-AI sense that devalues labor, I do not think any of these vibe coded decomp projects are actually good for Microsoft generally or Windows and Xbox specifically. This initiative seems so vague as to be undefinable, and the XBOX LABS splash page itself does not reveal much except a place to put your email and a bunch of footage of existing Microsoft properties put through an overly slick and tacky code effect. But if we are to take Sharma at her word that she is influenced by seeing projects like Mario in Elden Ring and software that theoretically shatters the cage of existing software ecosystems and “challenge[s] our existing business models”, then that sucks for Windows, because nobody on earth actually enjoys using Windows or the basic business model that underpins the entire operating system.

Windows exists on the back of countless, tiny de facto monopolies. If the future of coding is limitless and agentic like these people believe, then nobody would ever install Windows 11 ever again. If they believe that these models are capable of producing infinite, good, complex software at a fraction of the cost, then they are conceding on some level that the rent-seeking nature of their existing software and OS ecosystem is inevitably cooked. And if they think that Copilot is going to be good or profitable enough to make up for a world where software is produced on demand, they have yet to realize that Copilot sucks ass and is a joke even among people who enjoy using AI.

Got really annoyed at that Sharma letter because the more I looked at XBOX LABS the less I knew what it was actually supposed to be vs. what she claimed it was.

In recent weeks, we’ve seen games rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed to support. Windows PC builds have been translated to run on Apple Silicon or ported to run inside a browser through WebAssembly and WebGPU, the latter now approaching 90% global browser support. Perhaps more surprisingly, we’ve seen many of the biggest games in the world have been remixed into the source code of another.

These experiments challenge long-held assumptions about our industry: the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games. While it is hard to predict the future of gaming, it is easy to see the possibilities in making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators and co-creators. These are unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models.

To be honest the surround sound option is probably the most interesting thing about the new HomePod mini but I believe this feature already existed in some weird form and they need to just commit to making a sound bar/sound system instead of "you can turn these into one if you have a Apple TV"
