Here’s the monthly data with a 12-month trailing average, so we don’t “look ahead” of the time series. We can see that visits from Canada are substantially down. Like, a *lot*. And if we looked at the French series by itself we’d see something too. But it’s not on the scale of Covid. Yet.
Smoothed monthly graph shows Canada has dropped in visits substantially, but not to the extent we saw in Covid

It drives me mad -- I unfortunately have one such long affiliations, punctuated by acronyms. What you don't know from the outside is that the actual string you have to use *varies each year* as institutions come up with new rules & new acronyms, and juggle for position in the long list.

It makes complete sense if you think about it. "We don't want to change; we had it so good and don't understand that the world is changing, why can't it just be as it used to be" is what most people think, especially old people, and we are collectively getting older same as "MAGA", really.

Good point on the first part. On the second part: governments spent billions to keep the prices down, sterilize the increase so that people could keep driving *without* having to pay extra. If drivers are willing to pay, let them pay; instead, the general public paid in their stead.

Paolo Crosetto @paolocrosetto.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Higher prices are crisis indeed, and affordability *is* a big deal; but they are also an opportunity to change -- and people do know it, see the share of sales of petrol/diesel:electric cars these last months. So why not exploit it?

Paolo Crosetto @paolocrosetto.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Not everyone is served equally by public transport, so big redistribution effect there. But e.g. in Netherland one could argue this effect is lower. Also, maybe administratively harder to do as public transport is organized locally. But spending billions so that people *don't change* seems stupid.

Question about policies about high gas/petrol prices -- maybe @giuliomattioli.bsky.social or @chittimarco.bsky.social could answer. Italy, France, ... spent billions to keep the price of gas at its level via large subsidies. Why not making public transport free instead? Would spending be higher?

Fair enough. Still I don't think the field shrugged. Duke did. The field was and is aflame about what Gino and Ariely did. The condemnation was unanimous. Duke is being called on to act since a good number of years.

But I don't think the community is stuck at "only they can do something" We had methodological revolutions: pre-registration, now ubiquitous; open sharing of data and methods, same; registered reports, on the rise. The Colada guys are from the same community, and raise unanimous support.

Also, I agree on your main point that the most stirking results are the most suspect ones; I would even agree that the most striking and marketed results are probably down to some sort of p-hacking. But this *does not* generalize to the discipline as a whole. Far from it.
000
Paolo Crosetto @paolocrosetto.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
This is not to incite a discipline war about who should take liability for Ariely, econ or psych or marketing or whatever. I think *Ariely* should take the liability; and that Duke should get their act together, after these later, very clear episode of data fraud.

Paolo Crosetto @paolocrosetto.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
As a behavioral economist, I must push back on the generalisation. Ariely is not a behavioral economist, despite what he says. He never studied econ & holds position in business. His work is more marketing/psych than econ, by far. Experimental econ scores high in all replication meta-studies.

Collective action is hard. Publishers know it -- that's why they act boldly, assuming the academic sheep will not organize. Public institutions should facilitate collective action, by providing infrastructure to make the leap easier. Luckily they're increasingly doing it, eg edch.eu
