October Country by Ray Bradbury. (for @tomsbrown.bsky.social & all others who love this month)
OCTOBER COUNTRY
... that country where it is always turning late in the year. That country where the hills are fog and the rivers are mist; where noons go quickly, dusks and twilights linger, and midnights stay. That country composed in the main of cellars, sub-cellars, coal-bins, closets, attics, and pantries faced away from the sun.
That country whose people are autumn people, thinking only autumn thoughts. Whose people passing at night on the empty walks sound like rain....

As long as British voters are not able to cope with trade-offs of Euro and Schengen then the healthiest option for the EU is a UK in the Single Market with a Customs Union but not a full member. The Brits have a choice between being a rule taker with benefits or a rule taker with nothing.

I talk about this a lot in "Lost Worlds" - the world didn't begin with people alive today, and it won't end with people today. Apocalypticism is a wonderful way of making it so you don't have to think about the real long-term consequences of your actions. If it's all going to end, why think further?

There are a few European languages in which the word for 'world' comes from words and roots to do with light – the world being the place lit by the sun. Lithuanian pasaulis 'world' is especially etymologically nice, as literally the under-sun (pa-saulė).

This is why an absolute Brandmauer against the AfD or isolating the Linke are not workable long term strategies. It is more viable and sensible for CDU/CSU, Greens and SPD to set tough conditions any party that wants cooperation must fulfil. If they do great! If not, tough luck.

This is an important new meta-study that shows that "ingroup love" does not necessarily link to "outgroup hate". I have long thought that, at least at the mass level, both "nativism" and "populism" are primarily about the "hate" of the Other and, hence, are more xenophobia and anti-establishment.
The co-occurrence of ingroup and outgroup prosociality across
121 societies

Kasper Otten

n an increasingly interconnected world, prosociality across group boundaries becomes ever more important. Yet, a common premise in the behavioral and social sciences is that people are prosocial mainly toward their ingroup and not outgroups. So far, evidence for this premise comes mostly from studies in which people must choose between ingroup and outgroup prosociality, thereby precluding positive associations between the two types of prosociality. We study situations in which people make separate decisions regarding the ingroup and outgroup, allowing us to examine how ingroup and outgroup prosociality are related. Across six large-scale and cross-societal datasets spanning 743,402 individuals in 121 societies, we find a robust positive relationship between ingroup and outgroup prosociality. This relationship holds across societies, different group categorizations, and a diverse range of prosociality measures, including
prisoner’s dilemmas, public good dilemmas, dictator games, and survey items on trust and tolerance. Although people are slightly more prosocial toward their ingroup than the outgroup, those who are prosocial toward the ingroup also tend to be prosocial toward the outgroup. The results offer an optimistic message for prosociality across group boundaries. When people are not made to choose between the ingroup and outgroup, they are generally prosocial toward both.

I've spent a lot of years studying a lot of collapses, and the truth of the matter is that they're always mundane: mild climatic shifts that reduce crop yields, a dumbass in power who makes some terrible decisions, neglecting things that obviously matter but the will to fix them can't be summoned.

@tedgioia.bsky.social making the case that Philip K Dick's "Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch," one of his most bonkers novels when it came out in 1965, is now a work of social realism. www.honest-broker.com/p/my-favorit...
Gioia on Dick: What a crazy book! Or at least that’s how it seemed back in 1965, when Philip K. Dick published The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. It was a strange book in a strange year.

But not anymore. The most demented things in this story are now a reality. Just consider….

A ruthlessly ambitious CEO who wants to relocate to Mars, and gets caught up in a fierce rivalry with another space-traveling technocrat.

All this is financed by the sale of addictive technology, which now becomes the focal point of people’s leisure hours.

Unwary citizens find themselves addicted to tech platforms, where users are represented by avatars. But the real goal of powerful tech enterprises is to lure users into compulsive behavior that can be monetized. And not just once—but day after day.

As a result, huge numbers of people waste their free time and spend all their money inside these make-believe platforms. They want to escape reality, not live in it.

Can you blame them. Global warming is out of control, and beyond any point where it can be fixed.

Meanwhile, a few wealthy elites are obsessed with transhumanist technologies for extending life—which often backfire.

In their struggles to maintain sanity in a dystopian world, people now get therapy from a chatbot—accessed via a device they carry with them wherever they go.

But some heavy users are so deranged by the emerging technology…..Cover of 1980s paperback version of the book features a bonkers, industrialist-looking guy with bulging fish eyes and light beams emerging from his head in the shape of a Greek cross while he gesticulates meaningfully. His suitcoat is transforming itself into batwings in a creepy fashion.
