I wrote about France's 'casseurs', about why they are neither protesters nor looters, and why the police seem unable to stop this violence, which only ever comes from relatively small groups (when compared to the hundreds of thousands who protest peacefully)

Who are France's 'casseurs' and why can't police stop their violence?
An investigation has been launched after France's Interior Minister admitted that police 'lost control' of Saturday's protests - but violence from a small minority is not a new phenomenon. So who are ...

Spoon bending… .Occult boom 1974, Japan
This striking black-and-white photograph captures a surreal moment during Japan’s 1974 "Occult Boom." A young boy stands indoors holding two metal spoons, focusing intently as he demonstrates psychokinesis or spoon bending (saji-mageru). Standing directly beside him—and assisting by holding or examining the bent cutlery with a gloved hand—is a costumed actor dressed as a masked tokusatsu superhero, reminiscent of iconic Showa-era television figures like Kamen Rider or Ultra Series heroes. Modern pendant lamps hang above, casting a sharp domestic light across the table laden with additional metal spoons.
In early 1974, Uri Geller visited Japan and performed his famous spoon-bending demonstrations on nationwide television, igniting an unprecedented cultural phenomenon known as the "Occult Boom" (Okaruto Būmu). Mass media outlets, children's magazines, and television variety shows were suddenly flooded with reports of "psychic children" (chounōryoku shōnen) across Japan attempting to bend metal cutlery using mental focus alone.

This photograph illustrates how pop-culture franchises and tokusatsu superhero media immediately crossed paths with the psychic phenomenon.

Reminded today of this all-timer from the early days of The Internet
France is bacon

When I was young my father said to me: “Knowledge is
power – Francis Bacon." I
understood it as "Knowledge is power, France is bacon."
For more than a decade I wondered over the meaning of the second part and what was the surreal linkage beteen the two. If I said the quote to someone, "Knowledge is power, France is Bacon," they nodded knowingly: Or someone might say, "Knowledge is power" and I’d finish the quote, "France is Bacon", and they wouldn't look at me like I’d said something very odd, but thoughtfully agree. I did ask a teacher what did “Knowledge is power, France is bacon" mean and got a full 10-minute explanation of the knowledge is power" bit but nothing on "France is bacon". When I prompted further explanation by saying "France is bacon." in a questioning tone I just got a "yes".
Ar 12 I didn't have the confidence to press it further. I just accepted it as something I’d never understand.
It wasn't until years later I saw it written down that the penny dropped.

A killdeer chick pauses on a rock while wading along the shoreline of a pond at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical color photograph, a killdeer chick fills the frame in right profile as it walks along the water’s edge. The upper half of the composition features the pond’s calm surface, reflecting the blue sky above, while the foreground reveals a rocky shoreline dotted with green algae.

A beautiful wildlife portrait capturing a young killdeer in its natural wetland habitat, an ecosystem vital to the species’ survival.
