There’s two kinds of prog rock: prog rock that makes you smart, and prog rock that makes you stupid. And you can’t tell the difference until it’s too late, and the polarities are reversing all the time

In 1939 it looks like global oil production was 3.46 million barrels per day. Today, the continent of Africa alone produces 7.9 million barrels per day. Half of the second world war was just about laying hands on enough oil! It doesn't even resemble a contest.

This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD: sheets.works/data-viz/hol...
an XKCD comic showing a precariously assembled tower of blocks. much is labelled "all modern digital infrastructure." a thin leg down at the bottom is labelled "A project some random person in Nebraska has been thanklessly maintaining since 2003."

I love watching documentaries on weird artists, I remember watching one on The Residents and the guy went “they were doing stuff we’d never heard before…turns out they had no fucking idea how to play their instruments and that’s why.”

I studied physics. The best thing I did to understand the material beyond the problem sets was to read a bunch of scientific biographies. Understanding why choices were made or particular problems prioritized makes a lot of stuff make more sense.

Yes! It's unflinching and I really like it. I don't need nothing but downer episodes, but it's such a great weird and sad story. I also love TNG's Parallels for giving you a glimpse into just how bad things *could* get.

Worth remembering that the "final solution" was *final* because it came after earlier "solutions", namely forced or "encouraged" remigration.

An enormous political scandal like Watergate on top of it all is both an opportunity to dump him and the reason he gets dumped. If some Republicans stood aside and let Epstein investigations move ahead, they could let things boil until they "have no other choice" but impeachment.

Jimmy V @pal-9000.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I think you can look at the Nixon impeachment threat as the party dumping him. Nixon was overseeing an extremely unpopular war, a spiraling economy, and (if I remember correctly) was seen as unhelpful to down ballot candidates. I could see the party doing something similar now.

Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

i have decided to set a challenge for myself: one of the dungeon or building interior generators in this should be basically out of the box cellular automata (it's fine to postprocess to a limited extent). one candidate rule: [[0,1,0,0,0], [0,0,2,0,0], [2,1,2,0,0], [1,2,2,1,0], [1,1,1,2,2]]

The world has failed in its goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial times, the UN said on Wednesday, in a sober assessment that laid out a new goal for fighting climate change that would set the world on an uncertain path.

It proposed a new goal of limiting the “overshoot” of rising temperatures and eventually figuring out how to undo the temperature gains, a highly uncertain path.

Three thoughts on this news item: 1. It's just one data point and not at a level of statistical significance for certainty. 2. Octavia Butler said count on the surprises, and this may turn out to be one of them! 3. Made possible by a global team using funding infrastructure that Trump is destroying.

Shadowy dark matter has eluded scientists for decades. The LZ experiment may have spotted one particle, called a WIMP, but more data is needed to check.

even though their influence on popular music was imho similar, it seems like way fewer people cared when Brian Wilson died compared to Dolly Parton. To me, this is just more evidence for the idea that it's better to spend your time advocating for child literacy than befriending Charles Manson.
