Tomorrow on my livestream "History Matters" Violence as Politics Doesn't need much of an explanation given Hegseth's seeming joy at the idea of a livestreamed execution. But there's a history to its use & implications. We need to confront it head-on Friday 10AM ET www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wUY...

According to Google there are about 111,000 persons of Somali ancestry living in MN out of 5.8 million folks. That’s about 2%. Over half of those were born in the U.S. And we certainly aren’t letting any more in at this point. Minnesota isn’t being “taken over”.

#ResistanceRoots Archibald Motley was born on this day in 1891 in New Orleans. He was a visual artist, modernist painter and a giant of the Chicago Black Renaissance. His diverse body of work carries a common theme: forcing the world to view people of color with dignity, nuance and respect. /1
Archibald Motley Jr. in 1929. Motley was a trailblazing visual storyteller who revolutionized how the global Black diaspora is represented in fine art. He mastered European classical techniques to uplift Black bodies, and helped the world “hear” jazz on canvas. He refused contentment and stood for uncompromising visibility. Whether documenting the working class of Chicago’s Bronzeville, the marginalized communities of Mexico or the harrowing racial traumas of the Civil Rights Movement, Motley’s brush always fought for human empathy. He rejected abstract art — even when it cost him his financial stability — because he refused to abandon his mission to celebrate the Black body. Today, Motley is recognized not just as a regional chronicler, but as an architect of 20th-century American modernism. His work continues to influence generations of contemporary artists. #ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1949: WERD, the first Black-owned radio station in the U.S., opens in Atlanta. Launched to give Black citizens a dedicated, independent voice in a segregated media landscape, the station became a vital command center for the growing Civil Rights Movement. /1
Jesse Blayton Jr., General Manager of WERD, in the station’s studio, 1949. WERD became the accidental blueprint for modern Black media, proving that financial independence and cultural fluency are tools for social liberation. The station’s DJs pioneered fast-talking, rhythmic, rhyming “patter” over musical tracks. This style redefined the disc jockey profession and was later adopted by mainstream white radio. By sharing a physical building with the SCLC, WERD provided MLK with a direct, unfiltered pipeline to the public. The station circumvented hostile white corporate media and kept the community safe, unified and organized. WERD’s financial success proved that a Black-owned enterprise could thrive in the heart of Jim Crow segregation without relying on white institutional approval. It forced the corporate white establishment to respect and reckon with the economic and political power of Black consumers and creators.
