Hourglass Body. I am a hourglass. Sand falls whether anyone is watching. Years become grains. My body becomes the glass someone believes they have the right to empty. There are questions that are never asked. #poetry #poem
I am a hourglass.
Sand falls
whether anyone is watching.
Years become grains.
My body becomes
the glass someone believes
they have the right to empty.
There are questions
that are never asked.
None of it alters
the measure of time.
Only the indifferent arithmetic
of another minute passing.
Sometimes coercion is not a hand
around the throat.
Sometimes it is a debt
placed quietly on the table.
Placed neatly beside is the suggestion
that refusal has consequences.
The suggestion
that surrender would be easier
that no one will come.
So the sand continues downward
through my narrow glass throat.

One grain.
Then another.
Until the body understands
what the mind cannot bear
to name:
that silence
is not permission.
It is fear.
That endurance
is not desire.
It is fear.
That remaining
is not agreement.
It is fear.
By morning,
the bed looks innocent.
I remain,
emptying myself
without witness.
Another grain
disappearing
down my neck.
Another second.
Another grain.
Then another.
Until time itself
feels like something
being taken
along with my hourglass body.

In the vast distance, a giant planet looms, its fragile moon green and blue with the textures and shifting clouds of Earth. "Wait, the orbit's locked. They turn together." A technician traces on the screen the translucent arc linking back to the planet's blotched equator. "It's a #lure." #vss365

the story about the ULEZ bomber, a white bloke in his 60s, still isn’t on the front page of the BBC News when it feels like quite a big story about online radicalisation & violence

One tragedy of migration is that people come, assimilate, pay their taxes to the nation, raise families with hopes and dreams, and make a positive net contribution: only to be vilified by those who believe that birthright entitles them to take, take, take, complain, denigrate, and contribute shit.

#vss365 #lure Someone once asked: "what is the lure of this kind of work", and I replied, "The money, clearly." Anyone who's had been paid large chunks of untraceable, untaxed cash will understand this. Equally, another consideration is that if I refuse, someone else gets an extra contract. On me.

#vss365 #mountain I had nowhere to go but where they wanted me to be. I had no problem leaving the Flatlands behind - I prefer my horizons high: Valkenburg, the only mountain, is really a hilll. A castle was built; burnt; built up again; it fell over ... a Python sketch; a molehill in a swamp.

#vss365 #cloud I left the club a couple of hours later. A half-hearted dub act had gone through the motions; I wasn't in the mood to dance. I had a coded brief in my pocket, and Raincoat's request in my head. I needed to get to Schipol: clouds broiled forebodingly, obscuring the midnight moon.

#vss365 #bequest 'This mission is cancelled, then?' I asked, innocently. 'No, it will go ahead.' Raincoat drew me in closer: 'But I must make a bequest.' I changed mental gears - English is not always a first language in our business: 'You want to ask something of me?' 'Yes, this is what I said.'

#vss365 #purify If there's ever been a space to purify your soul, the Paradiso must rank 'on high'. Low-key and unassuming outside and in: heaven is not found in a place, but in its people. But, as I entered, I saw Raincoat: face like thunder, he looked as comfortable as a Methodist in a brewery.

#vss365 #nurture One thing about my line of work is that, well, some people always need other people to sort out ... problems. Job security is always a bonus. It's easy to fuck things up, I mused as I walked back into town, but would I ever get to nurture something? Or, more to the point, someone?
