It’s settled then. Next year @dieworkwear.bsky.social attends and covers NY Climate Week. Actually… this could be a really cool event: How fabrics, craftsmanship, and tailoring of old have us covered for a hotter, wetter world.

Great write up! Just back from seeing PB in Brooklyn myself. What a show and what an amplifying effect the absence of phones created.

My #ClimateWeek is just about wrapped and most of my team has left NY so it was time for the customary work travel solo outing: sad girl music edition! Phoebe Bridgers at Barclays Center for a no-phones show feat. surprise mid-show appearances from boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus.

Even if there are other megatrends dominating headlines, “you gotta talk about climate. Because if we don’t, who will?” Enough said. That’s what this week is all about.

We’re seeing right now how quickly capital can move (e.g., AI) when the private sector throws its weight around. So “why is funding quick and easy for corporations and slow for justice?” We must recognize, challenge, and correct this imbalance of priorities.

“Speed should be a progressive value.” We have the solutions to significantly reduce emissions and shift the global economy to clean energy and sustainable practices. What we need to do now is mitigate barriers and accelerate that transition.

The 🚅 pulled into Penn Station for #ClimateWeekNY just in time to catch @leahstokes.bsky.social and @kkwilkinson.bsky.social discussing their latest books, “The Carbon Wave” and “Climate Wayfinding,” respectively. Some much needed energy and inspiration to begin a busy week, including…

Heading to #NYClimateWeek later this month and am aware of my lack of planning so far. These days I’m working on strategies related to the climate-infrastructure nexus, #energymodeling, and sustainable responses to AI-driven demand. Would love to hear about any standout sessions. #ClimateWeek26

I’ve gotten by for about three years now w/o L2 at home, planning errands around necessary L3 public charges. And when I need to go out of my way, it’s a nice ~20 min reading/podcast break.

I like the Khruangbin recs and would add Glass Beams, Balthvs, Shāheri, BADBADNOTGOOD, and The Destruction of the Cult of the Sun. Also, not totally psychedelic but guitar forward instrumental: LA LOM, Hermanos Gutierrez.

What the AGs are pursuing is almost laughably childish and - at best - ill informed of the legitimate reporting regimes that have been formalized in recent years. Many of those same AGs are running the same playbook on major insurance companies.

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines. When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

The pressure, denouncement, and abuse of scientists and experts plays out in Bewilderment almost identically as it has since 2025, complete with periods of fragile hope that key efforts would be spared. This is a strong underlying background tension throughout the book.
100
Packy Griffin @packygriffin.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Unfortunately, Bewilderment is painfully prescient. Published originally in 2021, it's easy to overlook how comparatively tempered the war on science and non-partisan expertise was during the first Trump admin, even as the COVID-19 pandemic strangled global economy and social norms.

Packy Griffin @packygriffin.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Bewilderment strings you along an intimate, emotional journey with a conclusion that will take your breath away. The moments between characters can feel small and occasionally, even ordinary. But the investment and emotional tax is meant to last well after you've closed the back cover.

The imaginativeness of Theo's astrobiology exploration wows and produces some truly visual language but the arc of the father-son storyline through Theo's own pained reasoning and treatment of Robin's internal and external struggles is the main thrust of the book.
100
Packy Griffin @packygriffin.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
The dynamic between Theo's parenting self doubt and stalled professional trajectory and existential self-doubt and Robin's struggles - both emotional/psychological and those of typical adolescence - are dramatic in a slow, suffocating sense.

Packy Griffin @packygriffin.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
As with other Powers's novels, Bewilderment is set within the intersection and tension between the fragility of nature and humanity and the voracious appetite for technological progress and all of its effects. A complicated father-son relationship perches perilously upon that tension.

Packy Griffin @packygriffin.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
It feels inaccurate describing this novel as "compact" - both in length and the scale of the story - compared to Powers's other recent works given the galaxy-spanning imagination of the characters. Yet it is a quicker & more linear story, bucking the multiple interwoven narratives of OS and PG.

Bewilderment by Richard Powers ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Playing catch up. If we’ve talked books, I’ve probably recommended Powers as The Overstory and Playground are all-time favs. Bewilderment came between them. Parents beware. This novel will slowly squeeze your heart to the brink of explosion. #bookreflection

Friday was the hottest day *ever recorded* for Earth's oceans, on average. Oceans continue to absorb more than 90% of the excess heat from global warming: www.sfchronicle.com/climate/arti... via @sfchronicle.com

Earth’s oceans just broke a heat record. The implications will be massive
Human-caused global warming and a strong El Niño are adding excess heat to the oceans, threatening marine life and providing storms with more energy and moisture.

In the summer of 2026 - characterized worldwide by vast wildfires, persistent heat domes, extreme precipitation events, and historic strain on energy and social systems - how can we still be spinning our wheels on action and solutions? This post captures the psyche that, I suspect, plagues too many.

Periods of burning are natural but increased intensity and frequency, as well as proximity to population centers is the new norm demanding clear strategies, investment, and fully resourced emergency management AND decisive action to mitigate the climate conditions driving increased risk.

Some of the >200,000 evacuated residents are returning but recovery efforts will continue long after the last flames are extinguished. The same catastrophe is playing out across Europe, in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, & Greece, & is now a seasonal phenomenon on every continent save Antarctica.

Fascinating chart in today's Bloomberg Green newsletter on the role of climate change in the Bordeaux wildfires. Deviations from 30-year precipitation patterns increased likelihood (summer dryness = increased threat of ignition) and power (>rainfall in the spring = >organic fuel to burn) of fires.

Thus I humbly request the retirement of the acquiescence to the altar of efficiency. Government is naturally inefficient and always will be. We unfortunately live in a world where communities can't wait around for reforms to address disease, pandemics, environmental degradation, etc.
