The thing that's increasingly sticking in my craw with the #SayonaraLara ending is that most defenses of how it conducts itself are to one degree or another based on the idea that Mari's wants and needs aren't as important as Lara's, presumably because she is superficially more put together.

Sayolara ending is mid lol. I understand what I think they were trying to get at, but it really needed more time in the oven. Either cut out the last 5 minutes, or add another episode to explore the implications in real detail rather than leaving every aspect of the ending up to interpretation

As someone who loves the manga, I was excited to watch how they would handle in live action. The trailer looked cool and the fact that they're playing an actual fighting game Street Figther, I couldn't see them screwing up this. But how naïve I was.

The show itself wasn't terrible. The adaptation was faithful to the source throughout its run, and despite a lot of moments feeling awkward due to the exaggerated manner which the characters express their excitement during the matches, I still found myself enjoying the show and craving for more. The show was cringe but in a fun way.

So you may be surprised as to why I would give such a low score, and the reason is simple: the last episode. The ending of it betrays the whole spirit of the show but to explain that, I'll have to spoil a bit. I don't know if this show got canceled, but the manga is still running and it's currently in the middle of a tournament arc. The show adapts this part, but changes into a team mode competition, and changes the matchups. The matches carry way less intensity and drama compared to the manga, but they were still fun to watch.

The problem is that after they finish the tournament, our characters are back at their school lives only to find out that the whole school is aware of their presence at the gaming tournament. Now our cast is faced with a life-defining choice and the result of it is beyond disappointing. Any form of character development is thrown into the trash can, the entire journey of our MC discovering herself and finding that she can be this proper lady that she envisions without having to give up her own interests, her own personality, suddenly feels like nothing more than a fever dream, a mere delusion that never happened.

Anyway I think my actual closing thought on #SayonaraLara for now is that it IS very amusing to me that I don't think it's operating in malice at all and I would ultimately be perfectly comfortable applying the yuri genre label to it. It's problems all just reduce to "dumbass thinks he's smartass"

People think the disappointment from Sayonara Lara's ending is because "they didn't kiss" are completely wrong. This is about not committing to anything, a vague and empty ending that makes no sense for the characters' desires and motivation as established in the SAME EPISODE.
