Also playing this game really redoubled my appreciation and made me MUCH more impressed at how modern RE (especially 2R, 7, and the Grace segments of 9) captures the mood and flow of the original game despite the RADICALLY different perspective and framing. Really a remarkable franchise.

#104: Resident Evil (1996) Playing this for Spooky Month was the right choice - despite everything, I was genuinely kind of shocked at how incredible this game still is. All but perfect aside from a few puzzles and other bits and bobs I needed to look up. Will absolutely be hitting REmake soon.

An absolute banger, instantly obvious why it became and remains an ironclad archetype of the survival horror genre. Extremely close to genuine gaming perfection.

The sound design is shockingly good for a campy horror game from the PS1 era. The guns all have a delightful pop even in all their lo-fi glory, enemies all carry distinct and recognizable cues for movement and other key actions, the soundtrack sets the pulpy arcade horror mood perfectly, and the laughably horrible voicework accidentally achieves perfect horror-comedy camp.

The game is also immaculately paced, with the dense and looping maps providing a steady stream of interesting discoveries and rewards from start to finish.

Even the graphics are really solid for a PS1 game - the camera work is outstanding and achieves a shockingly cinematic experience decades before the modern push for Prestige Movie Video Games, and the game does a great job of keeping key elements readible in and amongst the pre-rendered backgrounds without making them clash too badly.

So glad I finally got around to to experiencing RE1, it remains a true classic.
