Ok, time for a thread about what I saw yesterday at #CrystalPalace. As you can see, just about everything has been repaired and re-painted, and in places (like the previously misidentified Xiphodon) re-positioned. It looks fantastic and you have to check it out, even if you've visited before...

Low-relief paper sculpture of a pigeon wing. It was frustratingly difficult to take a good picture of this. At some point, I'd like to attempt a more detailed wing, but this 'quick' one answered my craving to make it at the time. From 2018, six years ago on this very day.
Low-relief paper sculpture of the upper side of the left wing of a pigeon, made by layering, scoring, and shaping pieces of paper to lend a three-dimensional impression. The same paper wing, but tilted diagonally upwards to catch a slightly different effect of the light.

A panoramic view of an area of coastal cliffs, populated by pterosaurs (Pteranodon, Nyctosaurus), marine reptiles (Elasmosaurus) and birds (Ichthyornis, Hesperornis), under an overcast sky and dramatic lighting. An origami Capricorn zodiac sign beast. A goat mermaid. I do love using blue as a background color. Is this cheating? Maybe. But I love the scale pattern and I hope teal is not far off the mark. All details achieved by folding only, duo color paper, different color on each side.An origami shark surfing on a wave. One piece of paper for the shark, a separate sheet for the wave, used as a stand to give the shark a more dynamic pose.A giant clam designed as a personal challenge. The goal was to create something using curved folds and my mind immediately zeroed in on the frilled mantle of this charismatic mollusc. An origami ichthyosaurus. Folded from a bird base.

This animal is really important for understanding pterosaur evolution, but let's start with the basics. It's a member of a group called the darwinopterans and at 2m wingspan it's the biggest known, but the skeleton is also superbly preserved and in 3D which is incredible.

I think I caught the proverbial bug again. 🤭 A work in progress of my latest origami model - a scorpion. I've been folding this piece of paper since Sunday but I've just been adding more folds to a flat piece of paper (Precreasing). Most of the visible progress has happened today. #arachtober
The "ugly stage" of collapsing the structure of a complex origami model is very ugly and lasts a long time.Pleats upon pleats of paper zig-zagging in multiple directions.

This chaos eventually leads to the intended shape, but each and every fold needs to be placed in a very precise location and needs to be "zigged" or "zagged" in the correct direction to make that happen.Slowly inching towards the end result.

The body, pedipalps and the first pair of legs have been produced successfully.

You can imagine the pleated section at the bottom as the part of the sheet where the 4th pair of legs is going to come from, and the corners of the square will turn into the 3rd pair of feet.

The 2nd pair of legs has been half-formed already.Done.

Enough progress for today.

Despite the initial growing pains the legs have fallen into place smoothly, which means I've managed to collapse the base fully within a single day.

Really happy with that pace, I've been feeling much slower than usual during the paper preparation stage and needed to take frequent breaks.

Trying to catch the tail end of #Spectember with this little piece of @fabioaleromero.bsky.social fanart. A solifuge scorpion in paper form. Not perfect by any means but very fun. Could also be seen as an early entry for #Spooktober. I'm ready. 🤭
An origami model of a solifuge scorpion, ready to strike.Solifuge scorpions are formidable predators.
Imagined as inhabitants of an alternate earth where vertebrates have never evolved.
Arthropods reign supreme.
Solifuge scorpions have taken the role of pelycosaurs (such as Dimetrodon, the best dinosaur) in the Permian ecosystem.
Huge isopods serve as prey.
Subdued by the vice-like grip of the pedipalp claws, their carapace cracked open by the oversized chelicerae.
This beast seems to rely on brute force, the stinger portion of the abdomen has been reduced in size.A bird's eye view of the solifuge scorpion.A little sneak-peek behind the scenes.

This picture here shows what is called a 'packing' in origami terminology, a preliminary step concerned with just designating the use of paper, 'which part of the model is located where in the square.'

The next step would be to use this as a basis for making a crease pattern, a similarly abstract representation of an origami figure 'exploded' into a square shape.

A crease pattern is like a single-image blueprint other origamists know how to read if they want to reproduce a particular model for themselves.
