Record heatwaves bring Britain’s second-best butterfly season in 16 years
Volunteers counted almost 1.4m common butterflies and moths, with painted ladies up 335% on last year The recording-breaking heat of 2026 delivered the second-best British butterfly season of the past 16 years, according to the Big Butterfly Count. The largest insect count in the world, in which more than 100,000 volunteers counted almost 1.4m common butterflies and day-flying moths, confirmed what many people experienced – a noticeable profusion of butterflies during the five-heatwave summer.

When will authorities realise you don’t mess with nuns? The dictionary needs a new word to capture the level of tenacity of a nun — there’s no rush when you’ve got centuries of tradition coursing through you. #nuntastic will do for now. Anyway: cheese 🧀 + PhD + history + nuns = 👌👌👌

As women, racialised, LGBT, disabled, working class folk have entered academia, we/they have exposed how knowledge is not some abstract thing to “discover.” Knowledge is produced in particular (hierarchical) social and political settings. Academia, like other institutions, reproduces inequalities.

Here is my thing: if he did plagiarise, and I am not sure, I believe he did, that would have been caught or at very least, he would have been told to cite more scholars to back up his claims, as for the other accusations, these have nothing to do with his academic work, and he didnt hurt anyone

in fact afaik the only Irish outlet that even covered it was the Indo, in a single story. there is no good reason for Irish commentators to be writing about Jason Arday in the first place, but to do so in the same year they uniformly ignored Lucey's scandal is evidence of a profound moral vacuum

I'd like to compare how Irish commentators wrote about Jason Arday with how they wrote about Brian Lucey, the Irish academic who had several papers retracted earlier this year because he had been corruptly peer reviewing his own work, but literally no Irish commentators wrote about it

The trouble, as I suspect Mary knows, is that when the right talk about universities being meritocratic in the past, they don't mean they were places where you got on due to your abilities, regardless of race, gender, or class, but that they recognised the "obvious superiority" of elite white males.
