you’re right! it feels mostly awful to Go Online™, these days. the internet in a sad state, for reason after reason after reason. but there is a way to fix it; to trade the voidful howling for a quiet & joyful song. here’s how to win the war for the soul of the internet, and build the Web We Want.

Map tiles for www.toiletmap.org.uk are now completely powered using a new API running on an @cloudflare.social worker. Over the next few months we'll be looking to ship a new frontend experience and fully migrate over to our new API as part of our move from Vercel We have an app on the way too!!

Snagged a great deal on a vinyl copy of one of my favourite albums. Couldn’t pass it up!! Certainly the new stand out LP in my collection
Two vinyl sleeves from the Lemon Jelly album 'Lost Horizons' displayed on a wooden table. The sleeve on the left features a bright, stylized vector illustration of rolling orange fields and a coastline under a blue sky. The sleeve on the right features a contrasting dark blue vector illustration of a city skyline and house at night. In the background, there are PlayStation and Nintendo Switch controllers and small potted plants.

recently started becoming really paranoid about using Spotify because I have no idea if they’ll start suggesting unlabelled AI generated music / artists. I’ll be cancelling when my current subscription period is up I think

We've just put our new Toilet Map dataset page live. You can use it to download a copy of our entire dataset to do with as you wish. It's licensed under CC BY 4.0 (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/...) I'm looking to put some time into documenting our API soon also!

Some Saturday reading 📖 My new copy of @gaillyk.bsky.social and @jo-anneb.bsky.social 's new book arrived just in time to pick up on my walk into town.
A café table with a cup of coffee, a glass of water, an almond croissant, and the book 'Designing Inclusive Public Toilets: Wee the People' by Jo-Anne Bichard & Gail Ramster.

My book is published today 📚. It’s called Designing Inclusive Public Toilets: Wee the People, written with @jo-anneb.bsky.social. It’s part inclusive design guide, part manifesto for better public toilets 🚽. Buy copies for all your friends! 🎁. Here’s what you’ll find inside 🧵

Some time back in Norwich
A view of Norwich Cathedral’s spire rising in the background under a partly cloudy sky, seen from behind a curtain of green willow branches. A red-brick building lines a calm river on the right side of the image.A bottle and a pint glass of beer sit on a weathered wooden picnic table, which is painted with colorful, peeling designs including musical notes and abstract shapes

finally picked an IBM Model M up, I used one ages ago at work and loved it - well worth the investment
A vintage IBM Model M mechanical keyboard with a coiled cable is placed on a kitchen countertop. The keyboard has a beige and gray color scheme with a full-sized layout, including a number pad and function keys.

does anyone know of a nice open source smart speaker platform (maybe pi based?) I'd like something for the kitchen to set timers, play the radio, ask random llm questions to perhaps that isn't owned by a big corp

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!
A line graph showing atmospheric CO2 levels at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1955 to 2025. The y-axis represents CO2 mole fraction in parts per million (ppm), ranging from 320 to 420 ppm, while the x-axis is years.

hello welcome to my tutorial on how the JPEG file format works
An edited version of the "how to draw an owl" meme. The title is "How to encode a JPEG of an owl". The first step is labeled "get some of these thingies", with a visualisation of the 2D cosine basis of the discrete cosine transform (a common sight in explainer articles). The second part is labeled "encode the rest of the fucking owl" (with the original and detailed owl picture above)
