Statement on the presence of Elaine Miller at Conference:
Earlier this week we learned that a conference fringe meeting (Sunday 9am Women's pelvic health: the massive, hidden environmental cost) was due to be addressed by a notorious campaigner against trans rights, Elaine Miller. We understood this to mean she would be at conference in person. With our friends in Trans Greens and Trans Young Greens, we wrote to the party to say: “Her presence at Conference would go against the policies of trans inclusion held by the Green Party of England and Wales, and that the platforming of a renowned and vocal transphobe would represent a serious safeguarding issue for our trans, non-binary, and intersex attendees. The presence of a speaker with such a notorious history of disrupting democratic processes would constitute a serious risk of intimidating trans members out of participation in the democratic processes of their party.”We said that “We expect the party to uphold its duty to protect trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender nonconforming members” by not allowing this to happen. Sadly, as of Saturday morning, we have received no reply nor any acknowledgement beyond an automatic mailbox response. We now understand that Elaine Miller’s appearance will be via Zoom. This is a relief for many of us who are at conference. The title of the meeting is a serious and important issue relating to healthcare. However we cannot accept the platforming of a notorious campaigner against the rights of trans people. We told the party that if we did not receive assurances we would discuss with our members what steps to take next. So here we are, asking you our members to let us know what you think we should do, at conference and afterwards, to defend and protect members and to ensure that those who campaign against queer rights do not find a platform in our party. We are at stall 12, come and let us know your thoughts. Or share them with us on our socials.

I have asked the Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission to come to Brighton, and today Brighton came to me with so many stories of how the EHRC Code of Practice is impacting them. Trans lives are already being harmed, and the EHRC needs to hear this.
Image is of Siân with three staff members from Refuge UK. They are stood smiling in Westminster Hall in the Houses of Parliament. A crowd of people is visible in the background participating in the mass lobby for trans equality. Image is of Siân holding a notebook and pen. She is stood in front of desks, staffed by people in high-vis jackets. A placard is resting against a table and reads: Trans people deserve real equality.

It's important to note that the group behind this lawsuit, the Green Women's Declaration, are not affiliated with the Green Party. Political parties must be able to decide who is and isn't allowed to attend their conferences. If the GWD are successful, it will set a completely ridiculous precedent.

This summer's heatwaves and devastating forest fires are yet another reminder that the climate crisis isn't some distant threat. It's happening right now. Nottinghamshire deserves leadership that's prepared to tackle the climate crisis head-on, not promote anti-science, conspiracist nonsense.
A quote from Councillor Bert Bingham, Reform Cabinet Member for Environment at Nottinghamshire County Council, which states: "I've never seen such nonsense as the anthropogenic global warming hoax"

Oh so we're just blatantly allowing the NHS to do conversion practices if they just dangle the carrot of "health care services" in front of someone. Surely more analysis to come, but this draft bill is a joke. No bill would be better than this bill. Perhaps that's what Bridget Phillipson wants.
A screenshot of the draft bill to "end Conversion Practices". It reads:
(3) Conduct which (a) is carried out by a person towards an individual with such an intention, but (b) is carried out in the course of providing health care services to the individual concerned, is not a conversion practice unless the person acts in such a way that falls far below the standards reasonable expected of a person in their position.

Labour bill to ban conversion practices reads like an instruction manual for abuse.

The UK Government has today published its draft bill on banning conversion practices in England and Wales – and after 8 long years of promises to bring in an effective ban, we’ll be waiting longer yet.

World Refugee Day post featuring the following quote by HRLC member, Dr Helen O'Nions

"Those of us who know refugees, know the hardships they have endured. These hardships do not end on arrival but continue through hostile immigration policies, lengthy delays, and a populist narrative stressing illegality and Otherness. Refugees are human beings.
