A couple of years ago I had a serious medical issue requiring emergency scans in the middle of the night and a week long stay in hospital. That first night the NHS saved my life. I still have to take medication every day. Bar taxes I pay nothing. What would this have cost me under a US style system?

Looking like something out of a Transformer movie, I caught this Southern Carpenter Bee reflecting morning sunlight. 🐝 #bees, #bugsky #macro #insects #pollinators #ECK #nature #wildlife #inverts 🌎

A large black bee with blue iridescence is oriented vertically on a white flower, with a green background of leaves. It is a Southern Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa micans), one of two large carpenter bees native to my area. Instead of boring holes in structures like some other species, it is a solitary nest builder in plant material.

50% of modern medicines come from plants. 70% of cancer treatments come from nature. The Amazon holds 10% of all life on Earth. We've studied <1% of it for medicine. We are cutting down cures faster than we can discover them. Every forest cleared = A cure lost.

Guess what??? Another woodsy scene😊 This red dirt trail was very inviting amid the changing leaves and filtered sun. A slim trail leading deeper into the forest but no moving ahead without a wee break to notice the sun reflecting off the tall evergreen at the trail head, its moss all but glowing in the morning light. Accepting foliage embracing their change dance softly in the mild warmth covering the trail in places like natures faerie lights. Beyond the beam, old growth forest beckons beneath a neutral sky

As soon as you step into the redwood forest, the sounds of the city gradually fade into the distance; some kinds of quiet don’t need to be deliberately sought out, you just need to step into nature, and your heart will naturally slow down

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)

Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights.

As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data.
