Alfred Nobel established the Nobel Prize after wake up call: newspapers mistakenly published his obituary when his brother died & what he read as his legacy horrified him speaking ill (factually) of the dead is literally the most effective way to curb living racist & Nazi public figures/politicians
There is a well-known story about the origin of the Nobel Prize, although historians have been unable to verify it, and some dismiss the story as a myth.[26] In 1888, the death of his brother Ludvig supposedly caused several newspapers to publish obituaries of Alfred in error. One French newspaper[which?] condemned him for his invention of military explosives—in many versions of the story, dynamite is quoted, although this was mainly used for civilian applications—and this is said to have brought about his decision to leave a better legacy after his death.[6] The obituary supposedly stated, Le marchand de la mort est mort ("The merchant of death is dead"),[6] and according to the myth went on to say, "Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before, died yesterday."[27] Nobel read the obituary and was appalled at the idea that he would be remembered in this way. His decision to posthumously donate the majority of his wealth to found the Nobel Prize has been credited to him wanting to leave behind a better legacy.[28][6] However, it has been questioned whether or not the obituary in question actually existed.[28] An actual obituary (pictured) stated "A man who can only with the utmost difficulty be considered a benefactor of mankind has died yesterday at Cannes. It is Mr. Nobel, inventor of dynamite. Mr. Nobel was Swedish." It was published on the first page of the Figaro on the 15th of April 1888 and retracted the next day.

A good example of one of the many, many small ways in which the "good old days" were terrible: In the 1880s, the average US rural housewife had to haul water into the house 8-10 times a day, 36 tons of water a year. And also haul out ashes & waste. (From “The Rise and Fall of American Growth”).

If Cardinal Tagle leaves the clerical state and announces his candidacy for President in 2028, would he be the candidate that for certain could defeat any of the Dutertes? I’d be interested to see some hypothetical polling on that. Two recent precedents - Aristide and Lugo.

In the months after Harris’ loss, much was made over the demographic shifts in the party. Young voters, Hispanic voters and Black voters — all central to the Democratic coalition — had moved substantially to the right. But Priorities’ post-election polling revealed an equally staggering swing: Between 2020 and 2024, people who consumed at least three hours of YouTube a day had moved 10 points toward Trump — a bigger swing than Black voters, Black men, young voters and a slew of other categories that were dominating headlines.

“The driver of behavior in ‘24 was so much more about your media consumption,” Butterfield said.

The Supreme Court’s “shadow docket” has cast very different shadows depending on which party holds the White House. When lower courts blocked Trump admin policies, SCOTUS intervened on an emergency basis to lift those orders in 77% of cases. For the Biden administration, that number was 0%.
Infographic titled “One Court, Two Standards” compares how the Supreme Court used emergency powers to rule on lower-court injunctions against the Biden and Trump administrations. Two panels show:
	•	Biden Administration: Lower courts blocked policies in 21 cases. All 21 cases are represented by red squares, indicating that 0% of injunctions/TROs were lifted by SCOTUS.
	•	Trump Administration: Lower courts blocked policies in 86 cases. 66 green squares and 20 red squares show that 77% of injunctions/TROs were lifted by SCOTUS.

Key takeaway box below reads:
“Using its ‘shadow docket,’ the Supreme Court granted emergency relief to lift 77% of lower-court injunctions against the Trump administration. It lifted 0% of those against the Biden administration.”
