wikipedia has been ANNIHILATED with AI bot traffic for a while now (because LLMs can't get enough of it) which puts a huge burden on its tech and server costs. and now it looks like bots are making unauthorized edits to pages and trying to hack community tools diff.wikimedia.org/2026/10/05/o...
Wiki editing: We’ve identified edits to Wikimedia wikis that we believe are from AI agents operated by OpenAI. These edits were not published to pages with visibility to general readers; almost all of them were testing edits in “sandbox” areas of the wiki. It also included a few edits to the configuration for a citation tool, which we believe were potentially malicious edits that were intended to misuse this tool as a proxy for fetching data from remote services. While Wikipedia policies allow bots to edit when they are disclosed and approved by the community, none of those approvals were sought in these incidents.
Etherpad probing and use: Agents we believe to be operated by OpenAI made some unsuccessful attempts to compromise our public Etherpad, a note-taking tool we host as a community service. Agents unsuccessfully tried to use it to fetch data from other websites as a proxy. Other agents also likely operated by OpenAI took notes about their tasks, though this did not appear to turn into coordination.
Excessive data downloading: Agents we believe to be operated by OpenAI made millions of automated requests to our public APIs to access the knowledge on Wikimedia projects, crawled millions of pages (mainly from our projects Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons), and made hundreds of thousands of data queries to the Wikidata Query Service (WDQS). This traffic may have contributed to a partial outage on WDQS in May. Wikimedia’s volunteers are the ones who come in first contact with, and clean up the mess left behind by AI agents. Rising bot traffic and agentic activity is showing a real impact on the Wikimedia projects and the infrastructure that makes it available for millions of users globally. In 2025, the Foundation reported that its bandwidth usage had increased by 50% due to the surge of bot activity on its websites since 2024. At the same time, 65% of the most resource-consuming traffic on its projects was coming from bots.

why are DAs, prosecutors, and judges always—always—so intent on delivering death that they will actively cover up exculpatory evidence and engage in corrupt tactics to knowingly kill an innocent person? it's some variation of this story over and over, in state after state.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

“Bongo” Ballpoint pen, pencil, watercolor, acrylic paint, and a little colored pencil.

Our man is in trouble this time, reader. Art supplies are scattered around a painting of an abstract cityscape. On the canvas we see a man in a telephone booth making a frantic call to his cat, Bongo. In the foreground, an answering machine is taking his voicemail, [Leave a message at the beep] --- “Bongo, Daddy got stuck in the painting. Go get help, Bongo.” Bongo stands at the base of the easel looking at the phone. Her tail in the air and ears perked up. Whether she’ll be able to help is open to interpretation.

Artist’s note: One of my favorites from the Spooky Pants book. I was playing around with the idea of a painting coming to life (like that guy in Ghostbusters 2) and kind of fumbled my way into this version. I really draw a lot of corded phones. I won’t stop.

an entire country can't be understood to *try* to repeal (or enact) anything; it either does or it doesn't. factions within virtually every country are constantly trying to do these things, though. the word for that is "politics."

this is my first time to hear of what i can only assume to be a song titled "choosin' texas" and its songwriter and/or performer, "langley." i was born in and continue to reside in texas. exurban/rural texas, to be exact. i guess whatever RS writers are into doesn't reach too deep into these parts.

Donner Hush X
The Donner Hush X is a headless electric guitar designed for traveling. Its body is kinda shaped like a Steinberger, but it's got a removable frame around the edge of the body that gives it the shape of a regular electric. It's got a humbucker and a single-coil, and they're controlled by a concentric volume/tone knob and a 3-way switch. Since this is a headless guitar, the tuners are integrated into the bridge.

@askylitocean.bsky.social is posting AI slop and calling it a van gogh (comments and quote reposts conveniently disabled). the actual van gogh is clearly nothing like the AI slop, which features realistic lighting, perspective, and forms.
bluesky screenshot of a skeet showing an AI-slop image of 2 people walking through a moonlit field, incorrectly attributed to vincent van gogh. the image is rendered in an impressionistic style wholly unlike van gogh's later work, and specifically nothing like the actual painting it was incorrectly named after. the actual van gogh painting in question.

What I can't get over is the Dems out there trying to transphobia their way out of these numbers. Just out there riding the crest of the wave, doing morally unsupportable pandering to bigotry at a time when it is also strategically foolish, just for love of the capitulation game.

they're all going to do this, sooner or later. the writing was on the wall the moment the first streaming service to announce ads went through with the threat. first, it'll be before and after shows. then it'll be during. and they'll be unskippable, and twice as loud as the show, just like cable.

Newspaper headline: WOODLAND FAIRIES DEFEATED IN FLORAL ARRANGEMENT CONTEST. In the article’s photo we see a man in a sweater vest posing next to his winning arrangement with a 1st place medal around his neck. To his left we see his opponents: a defeated band of woodland fairies with their losing arrangement. They look distraught and confused and they should be, reader. How could this happen to the heavy tournament favorites? They’re woodland fairies. Flowers are their life and yet when it was all on the line, they came up short. The winner was just a floral enthusiast not even a professional florist. A shocking defeat and an inspiring win.

Dear Democrats, You will never be able to triangulate your way through racism/sexism/transphobia, because pushing a lighter, politer form of bigotry is always a lose-lose proposition. The bigots want the uncut stuff, while normal people aren't drawn to cowards who sell out. Stand your ground.
