Pignose PGG-TWIN
I found this Pignose PGG-TWIN in the same catalog I found yesterday's guitar in, and I thought it was too good not to post right away.

You might know Pignose from their small travel amps. Frank Zappa had one that he heavily modified and took everywhere, for example. What you may not know is they also made travel guitars in the late 90s and early 00s that were kinda a competitor to the Fernandes Nomad line. The normal guitar was a single-cutaway design, but I've also seen one shaped like a Flying V. The PGG-TWIN is the weirdest one of the bunch, though.

It's a 12/6 doubleneck guitar, and each neck is set up the same way: a hot rails-style pickup jammed next to the bridge and a speaker for a built-in amp. (Yes, this guitar has two amps. No, I don't know why.) There's a volume knob that's also a push/pull power button and a toggle switch for each amp. You can even have both amps on at the same time if you want. Each neck has 22 frets. The top one has a 6/6 headstock, and the bottom one is a 3/3.There's a label between the Strat-style hardtail bridges that shows you how to use the volume knob. It reads:

Power & Volume Knob
Pull: Power-on
Push: Power-off
Full Volume -> Feedback!

Aria M48V
The Aria M48V is a semi-hollow electric guitar with a curved F-hole and an extra point coming out of the lower half of the body. It's got two P-90s that are controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way blade switch. It's also got a Bigsby, a 24-fret neck, and a 3/3 headstock.

ESP THE ALFEE Signature Angel Classic Junior
I've posted a few guitars that ESP made for The Alfee's guitarist Toshihiko Takamizawa (Takamiy), and here's another one. This one is the most normal of the bunch, which is saying something.

The ESP THE ALFEE Signature Angel Classic Junior has a shape that's inspired by a Les Paul, but has went through some rather creative surgery. It's got an asymmetrical waistline, and the cutaway horn has been moved all the way back to where your leg would rest if you played this sitting down. The body also has The Alfee inlaid on it, as well as one of Takamiy's other angel-inspired guitars, making this the only instance I can think of where a guitar's inlaid onto a totally different one.

This guitar's got two humbuckers, and they're controlled by a volume knob and a 3-way switch. It's also got a Floyd Rose trem. The neck has angel inlays and is topped by a curly 4/2 headstock. (Ignore the black things on either side of the headstock; those are from a guitar stand.)

Peter Cook Axe bass
Here's a picture that Baron Wolman took when the Who played the Cow Palace in San Francisco on 11/18/67. In it, John Entwistle is singing and playing a bass guitar that started life as a Fender Jazz, but has been heavily modified by luthier Peter Cook. The body is really narrow where it joins up to the neck, then flares out to a rounded triangle shape for John to rest his arm on at the top and a hook-shaped area at the bottom. The neck, bridge, and pickup are from a Fender Jazz bass, but the knobs (one volume and one tone) don't look particularly Fender-ish.

John also had a version of this bass (called the Axe) that was based on a Gibson Thunderbird.

Donner Hush X
The Donner Hush X is a headless electric guitar designed for traveling. Its body is kinda shaped like a Steinberger, but it's got a removable frame around the edge of the body that gives it the shape of a regular electric. It's got a humbucker and a single-coil, and they're controlled by a concentric volume/tone knob and a 3-way switch. Since this is a headless guitar, the tuners are integrated into the bridge.

Eastwood "Be Stiff" bass
Eastwood has made versions of a lot of DEVO's more famous guitars, like the LaBaye 2x4, Ibanez Cloud, and "Whip It" Les Paul. They also made this: the "Be Stiff" bass.

The original bass probably started as a Gibson EB of some sort, but the body's been cut down dramatically. If you flip the bass upside down so the neck is pointing at the ground, the body looks like a mushroom, with a large oval top and thin shaft where the neck bolts up. It's got two pickups that are controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way switch. Eastwood topped the 2/2 headstock with an Energy Dome and the DEVO logo.

The bass in the picture is a right-handed model, but a lefty version was also available.

Washburn WV40 Vindicator
The Washburn WV40 Vindicator is an asymmetrical Flying V-style electric guitar. The top part of the V is longer and thicker than the bottom, and it's also curved. The guitar has two humbuckers, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way switch. The 24-fret neck has compass-shaped fret inlays and is topped by a reversed 6-in-line headstock. My favorite part is the pinstriping that follows the outline of the body.

Line6 Variax 700 Acoustic
The Line6 Variax 700 Acoustic looks like a fairly normal thinline acoustic guitar. It's got a deep cutaway and the fretboard extends into the soundhole, giving you access to the higher notes on the treble strings. If you just look at the front of the guitar, the only real clue that this isn't a normal acoustic is the 6 individual piezo pickups in the bridge. The controls for the Variax electronics are on top of the body. There's a model selector knob and three sliders. In the regular mode, the sliders control the virtual mic position, volume, and a compressor. If you double-tap the knob, however, that puts the guitar into alternate tuning mode. You can use the sliders to pick preset tunings, or even create your own. There are two output jacks: a normal 1/4" output and a special Variax cable that's basically an RJ45 cable with a special connector that'll lock it in place. This will take care of sound output and power for the guitar if you've got the right breakout box.

JD Guitars T-12
The JD Guitars T-12 is a 12-string version of a thinline Telecaster, with a single-cutaway semi-hollow body that's got one F-hole. It's stained red at the end of the body and fades to yellow the closer you get to the neck, giving it a "tequila sunrise" finish that's only covered by a small S-shaped pickguard that barely reaches to the bridge plate. There's a DiMarzio hot rail-style humbucker (maybe a Fast Track T? not sure) in the bridge, and a normal single-coil in the neck. They're controlled by a volume knob, two tone knobs, and a 3-way switch. The 6/6 headstock is finished the same way as the body.

Kay K900G
The Kay K900G is a semi-hollow electric guitar with a symmetrical double-cutaway body shape, a narrow waist, pointy horns, and one F-hole. It's got two single-coil pickups, and each one has its own volume control and on-off switch. There's also a master tone control and a 3-way rhythm/bass/solo switch. The weird thing about the controls is all of them are sliders except for that one switch. The guitar also has a Bigsby-style trem, block inlays, and a 3/3 headstock with a full-width string retainer right above the nut.

Ibanez Artcore AWD82T
The Ibanez Artcore AWD82T is a semi-hollow archtop guitar with a Strat-style double-cutaway body. There's binding around the edge of the body and around the two F-holes. It's got two humbuckers, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way switch. The T on the model number stands for "tremolo". The neck has large "kumogara" block inlays and a 3/3 headstock.

The AWD82T was a one-year wonder for Ibanez, and it was replaced by the AWD83T in 2006.

Murph Squire 1-T
Murph was a Californian guitar brand that only lasted for two years in the 1960s. I've posted one of their guitars before, and here's another one: the Squire. This offset electric has one single-coil pickup and a tremolo, hence the designation 1-T. The pickup is controlled by a volume knob and a tone knob. Murph is written on a large plastic cover for the 3/3 headstock.

The Traveler Escape Mark III is a headless travel guitar with a single cutaway. It's got a full-scale neck, and the tuners are under the strings where the soundhole would be on a regular acoustic. There's a piezo pickup in the bridge, and controls for it (volume, bass, and treble knobs) are on top of the body.

BC RIch Warlock Body Art Collection "The Fly"
The BC Rich Warlock is a very angular metal guitar with a double cutaway body that's got a big V cut out of the end, leaving two asymmetrical points. It's got a humbucker in the bridge that's controlled by a volume knob, a 24-fret neck, and a 3/3 headstock that's just as pointy as the rest of the body.

Speaking of the body, this guitar is part of the Body Art collection, and has a fairly realistic top-down picture of a fly that takes up the whole body.

The Ibanez Alpha A527 is a 7-string electric guitar with fanned frets. The double-cutaway body has had a curve cut out of the end and a beveled cutaway in the top of the body where your arm goes. It's got two Fishman Fluence humbuckers, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, a 3-way blade switch, and a coil tap switch. Gibson Ultratone 6
This stunning instrument is a Gibson Ultratone 6 lap steel guitar. The top of the body (closest to you when it's on your lap) gently widens out from the nut, and the silver fretboard follows this widening. It looks to me like a pool of liquid mercury with some gems set in it for position markers. The bottom of the body (farthest from you) also widens out around the 14th fret and gives troom for the controls. The bridge and P-90 pickup are covered by a large red cover with the Ultratone logo on it. The P-90 is controlled by a volume knob and two tone knobs. From what I've been able to find, the middle tone knob acts more like a presence knob. The 3/3 headstock also has a cover on it so you can't see the shafts of the tuners.

Fender Rhinestone Stratocaster prototype
In 1975, Ivor Arbiter (the UK's Fender distributor at the time) asked sculptor Jon Douglas to make "a non-boring Strat". Now, if you look at just the hardware specs, this is basically the same as any other Strat that came out of the factory in 1975 (three single coils, one volume and two tone controls, 5-way blade switch, maple neck with rosewood fretboard and big 70s headstock). The body is a whole different story, though.

The body of this Strat is made out of a fiberglass core that's been covered in cold cast bronze. Feathery curls stand out from the body, with the longest one running from the bridge all the way down the top horn. The guitar has also been studded with white rhinestones, giving it its name.

Six guitars were made in this original run, but only two survived a fire at the Fender store where they were located. Another 50 were scheduled to be made in the 1980s, but Douglas died halfway through the run.

Veillette-Citron VC-II bass
Here's a screenshot from Stop Making Sense, the Talking Heads concert film. David Byrne is playing an acoustic guitar and singing, and Tina Weymouth is standing behind him and playing a blue Veillette-Citron VC-II bass. It's a double-cutaway design with a long upper horn. There are two pickups, and each one is controlled by a volume knob and a tone knob. There's also a 3-way switch.

I've posted other Veillette guitars and other Citron guitars, so seeing that they worked together is kinda neat.

Azor electric
I don't know too much about this guitar, but it looks too good not to talk about. Judging by the name on the pickups, it was made by Azor. It's a hollowbody electric with a single cutaway and a curve cut out of the end of the body. It kinda reminds me of an Ovation Viper, but with a deeper cutaway. It's got two single-coil pickups, and each one has its own volume and tone control. There's also a 3-way switch in the lower horn. The tailpiece follows the curve in the end of the body. The black plastic (!) fretboard has large dot inlays, and the neck is topped with a 3/3 headstock.

Rickenbacker 481/12
The Rickenbacker 481/12 was a one-off guitar that has the maple body from a 481 (the guitar version of the 4000 series bass) and the maple neck from a 660/12. The two pickups are the toaster-style units, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way switch. All of the hardware (tailpiece, pickup covers, tuners, etc.) is black, and the body has checkerboard binding.

Le Breton custom doubleneck
Here's a live shot of Khn from Angine de Poitrine playing a doubleneck guitar that Canadian luthier Raphael La Breton built for him. It's basically a Stratocaster and a Precision bass that have been spliced together. The Strat half has the normal three single-coil setup, replacing three blade-style pickups that were part of the original build. They're controlled by a volume knob, two tone knobs, and a 5-way blade switch. There are also two on/off switches that were probably coil taps for the original pickups. The top tone knob has been replaced by a die. The Precision half has the normal setup (split-coil pickup, one volume and one tone knob), but the knobs have been replaced by dice and the pickguard is covered in black tape to hide the original black & white tortoiseshell pickguard. Each neck is microtonal up to the 12th fret; that is, each normal fret has a half-tone fret between it and the fret for the next whole tone. The Strat neck has a 3/3 headstock, and the Precision neck has a 2/2 headstock. Here's something else I noticed about this guitar when I watched their performance on Jools Holland's show: red and green fret markers on the top of the frets! I'm not sure where they start because this screenshot I took has the headstock cut off, but you can see how they basically alternate red / blank / green / blank all the way down the neck.

Gower Fate Vanderpool custom
Gower Guitars was based out of Nashville, and they made many guitars for country musicians, like this one for session guitarist Fate Vanderpool. (You can tell it was his because the pickguard has FATE inlaid in it with abalone capital letters.) It's got a single-cutaway shape, and the top horn is long and curved inwards like an old F-style mandolin. It's got a humbucker-style pickup in the bridge and a single-coil in the neck, and they're controlled by a volume knob in the lower horn, two tone knobs (one for each pickup), and a 3-way switch. (One of the tone knobs is missing in this picture. It would be to the left of the white knob, above the switch.) The guitar also has thick abalone binding around the edge of the body, a Bigsby trem, large abalone block inlays, and a mandolin-inspired 3/3 headstock.

The Airline Barney Kessel Swingmaster is a fantastic-looking hollowbody electric with a double cutaway design shared with all of Kessel's various signature models and a single F-hole. Kauer Gripen
The Kauer Gripen is a more angular version of an Explorer-style electric guitar. There's also been a V carved into the front and back of the body, so the section with the pickguard, pickups, and bridge is thicker than the area where the knobs are and the area you whack your elbow on.

The guitar in the picture has two humbuckers. Each one has its own volume knob, and there's also a master tone knob and a 3-way switch. The reversed 6-in-line headstock is just as angular as the body.

The Ibanez EHB-600 bass is a new, headless model. Its body has a long upper horn and a deep lower cutaway. It's got two pickups, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a balance knob, a mid boost/cut knob, a concentric bass boost/cut / treble boost/cut knob, and a switch that turns the EQ on or off. Charlston acoustic
This Charlton acoustic was made in Texas around 1940. It's got a symmetrical double-cutaway body that's reminiscent of a Danelectro. The bridge is angled in the opposite direction from the harp tailpiece. There's a large pickguard below the neck, and the end of the fretboard stair-steps past the 15th fret. I like the little curl at the end of the 3/3 split headstock.

You might be wondering where the soundhole is. It's in the next picture. This is the back of the Charlston acoustic. The soundhole is actually a half-circle that takes up the whole end of the guitar. It's made up of two quarter-circles, and slats fan out from the point of the quarter-circle to the curve. I think it's one of the prettiest things I've posted on here in a while.

Fender Voyager prototype
The Fender Meteora is an offset electric guitar with a double-cutaway body. Before they went into production, two prototypes were made using the model name Voyager. One of them was set up in full Telecaster mode, with a blonde finish, two single-coils, and a 3-saddle Tele bridge. The one in the picture, however, is meat to be more futuristic. Its two pickups are hidden under the large metallic pickguard, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way switch. Its tremolo and headstock are both Strat-style. I like the red letter F on the pickguard.

Vox Starstream XII
The Vox Starstream XII is a teardrop-shaped hollowbody guitar with a curved soundhole on the top of the body. It's got two single-coil pickups, and they're controlled by a volume knob for each pickup, a master tone, and a 3-way switch.

...oh, and there are a few other doodads thrown in too. Hold on tight, because it's gonna get weird.

Those of you that have seen the other Vox guitars I've posted know that their 60s models were loaded with built-in effects, and this one's no different. There's a switch & knob for a treble/bass booster, a switch & knob for a distortion circuit, and a switch & knob for a repeater circuit along the bottom of the body. There's also a switch above the neck pickup that triggers a built-in E note so you have something to tune to.

The weirdest thing about this guitar is definitely the wah-wah pedal. Flip a switch above the bridge pickup, and you can rock the triangular thing sticking up out of the bridge back and forth with your palm.

The headstock is Vox's normal ovoid triangle shape, but they've put 6 tuners on both sides of it.

Parker PAB40 Tomahawk bass
The Parker PAB40 Tomahawk is an acoustic bass from the same company that made the Parker Fly. It's a single-cutaway design with a pointy horn and another weird point coming off the top of the body, close to the waist. Instead of having a regular soundhole or F-holes, it's got a series of concentric arches that get bigger the closer they get to the edge of the body. The extra point on the body makes a little room for the biggest arch, and the higher frets on the fretboard are stair-stepped to make room for the arches as well. There's a piezo pickup installed into the asymmetrical bridge, and it's controlled by a Fishman preamp.

Atlansia Pentagone bass
The Atlansia Pentagone is a 5-string electric that looks like somebody took two basses, cut them in half, and mixed the pieces up. The top half of the bass (where your arm goes) looks like a large, rounded-off triangle that bulges out at the end of the body and tapers down to meet the neck at the 12th fret, while the bottom half of the bass (where your leg goes) looks like a fairly normal Strat-ish shape with a deep, beveled cutaway. There's a big black armrest bolted to the widest part of the top triangle.

There are two pickups, but I think each one is really five of Atlansia's single-string pickups in a rectangular enclosure. The neck pickup is angled so the top of the pickup is closer to the neck. They're controlled by one volume knob, two EQ knobs, and a balance knob.

The narrow, Strat-ish headstock is split 3/2, and the tuning peg shafts almost line up in a perfect straight line. (The one for the G string is pushed over a little to the right to make room for a string tree.)

Gibson Dusk Tiger
The Gibson Dusk Tiger is a cyborg Les Paul. Instead of having a floating pickguard, it's got two metalllic ones that are mounted to the body: a large, curved one that covers the bridge pickup and the controls, and a small one for the neck pickup that looks like Frank Zappa's mustache.

Speaking of the pickups, there's a humbucker in the bridge position, a P-90H (a humbucker-sized P-90) in the neck position, and a piezo setup in the bridge. The two magnetic pickups have black covers that are reminiscent of the pickups on the Les Paul Recording models.

The guitar is controlled by four knobs that follow the curve of the large pickguard and a 3-way switch in the normal spot. Each pickup has a volume knob, and there's a master tone knob as well. The fourth knob is the Master Control Knob, and it controls what tuning you're in, what kind of guitar is being modeled, and even works with the robot tuners. The output jack is a combined 1/4 inch / XLR jack, and there's a switch that'll let you choose if the guitar's being output with low or high impedance. The guitar even comes with a computer interface so you can change what you need to on there.

My favorite part of this guitar is the tiger fang inlays on the 5th and 12th frets.

Here's a picture of Dolly Parton (RIP) on stage during the ceremonies for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. She's wearing a black leather suit that's got small gold chains and red & white rhinestones all over it. Her guitar, a Mitchell MM-100, is also covered in rhinestones.

The MM-100 is a 3/4 scale Strat-shaped electric guitar with two humbuckers. They're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way blade switch. The strings go through the body, over the Les Paul-style bridge, over the 24-fret neck, and stop at a 3/3 split headstock.

Monteleone Teardrop
The Monteleone Teardrop is probably the wildest archtop jazz guitar I've seen. It's got what would be a double-cutaway body if the upper horn wasn't curved inwards like a F-style mandolin. There's also an extra curved point coming off the end of the body on the treble side and two oval soundholes on either side of the bridge instead of F-holes. The neck has triangular inlays, and the 3/3 headstock is bigger on the treble side, making it look like Gumby's head.

Tantra Rock bass
The Tantra Rock bass is a 24-fret electric bass from France. Its body is shaped like a big equilateral triangle, and the neck comes out of the point at the top. It's got one pickup that's controlled by a volume knob and a tone knob. Its triangle-shaped headstock is split 2/2.

LoBue doubleneck
This 12/6 doubleneck was made by American luthier Charles LoBue for jazz guitarist Steve Khan sometime around 1975. It's a double-cutaway design with a German carve around the body. Each neck has two humbuckers that were made by Larry DiMarzio (LoBue's apprentice at the time). They're controlled by a volume knob, tone knob, and 3-way switch for each neck, as well as a 3-way neck selector switch and a small 3-way switch that's a coil tap/phase switch for the bridge pickup for the 6-string. All of the controls are behind the bridge of the 6-string neck. Both neck have teardrop-shaped inlays.

Arturo Valdez acoustic
Here's a thinline acoustic guitar that was made by luthier Arturo Valdez. It's got a single cutaway, and it's the only acoustic guitar I've seen with an asymmetrical waist. The curve on the bottom of the body (where your leg goes when you play it sitting down) is longer and shallower than the curve on the top. The guitar also has what looks like a humbucker mounted next to the neck, and there's a volume knob for it in the cutaway.

Electro Vibrola Spanish
The Electro Vibrola Spanish is a fretted solid-body electric guitar that was made by RIckenbacker in the late 1930s. (The Spanish refers to how you hold the guitar when you play it. Yesterday's guitar would've been referred to as Hawaiian-style if it had been released in the 1930s.) It's got an acoustic guitar-inspired Bakelite body that's shared with the Electro Model B Spanish model, but is twice as thick to house the motor, flywheel, and solenoid for the electronic vibrato system that's built into the bridge. This system, called the Vibrola, is identical to the one that's been used on some Gibson models, but is controlled by the electronics inside the body rather than a normal wiggle stick. Ventilation holes for the electronics have been drilled into the chrome on the front of the body as well as the back of the body.

The horseshoe pickup is controlled by a volume knob, and there's also a knob to control the vibrato. There's a cord hard-wired into the guitar, but it's not an output cord; you plug it into the wall to provide power for the vibrato mechanism. The neck has 24 frets, and is topped by a 3/3 split headstock.

Mosrite lap steel
Those of you that have been following this account for a while know that I love steel guitars in any configuration (lap, console, or pedal). This one's definitely the weirdest one I've found.

In 1984, country singer and musician was badly injured in a car crash. As a show of support, Semie Moseley of Mosrite guitars built her a lap steel guitar that's shaped like a crutch. He measured and configured it so she should actually use it as a crutch, too. It's a headless 6-string design, and the tuners are located between the bridge and the hand grip. It's got a single-coil pickup like you'd see an any of Mosrite's other guitars, and it's controlled by a volume knob.

There's a plaque on the back with an inscription that reads:

Barbara! With God
You Will Make It
Jesus Loves You
and I Love You

Oriolo "Felix The Rock" Takamiy Signature
A few days ago, I posted a custom ESP guitar that was made for The Alfee's guitarist Toshihiko Takamizawa (aka Takamiy). ESP wasn't the only company that made guitars for him, though.

Here's a solidbody electric that was made for him by Oriolo. It's shaped like beloved cartoon character Felix the Cat with angel wings (Takamiy's signature). It looks like he's standing behind some sore of red shield (the pickguard). His right arm is holding onto it, and his left arm is stretched out (forming the guitar's neck) and pointing at something with his left hand (the headstock).

The guitar has two humbuckers, and they're controlled by a volume knob in his left foot and a 3-way switch in his right foot. It has a Floyd Rose trem, and Oriolo is written below it. Takamiy has his name inlaid on the fretboard in large capital letters. The headstock is painted to look like a pointing hand, and it's split 6/2 even though the guitar only has 6 strings. Maybe the extra 2 tuners on the bottom can be used if you don't have strings that are long enough to reach the last 2 tuners on the top? I really don't know.
