Text reading: He’d carefully tied the cravat around Ed’s neck then, and then Ed had never given it back, and mostly he hadn’t thought about it, but now he is. Now he’s thinking how Ed’s had it all this time, how both of them have, even after the other Stede abandoned his Ed.

“Here, wait,” his other self had said, when Stede had been about to take off for breakfast. Albatross had dug around in the Chinese clothes, pulled something out of a trouser pocket, and come out with a bit of tattered brocade, dark red. “One more thing,” he’d said, and tied it around Stede’s neck, like a jaunty little neckerchief.

It didn’t match — it doesn’t match, he thinks, as he touches it — and he’d said so, and Albatross had peevishly replied that he knew, but — and then Stede understood. Ed’s bit of red silk. A reminder, to himself, or his other self anyway, and now a message to Ed. That he remembers, that they both remember. Even if it doesn’t match.

happy wip wednesday i did say i was working on my cannibalism fic so everyone behold. warnings for mentions in the text of fear of main character death, oblique vomit mention, and conspiracy to commit cannibalism

He tucks Stede back under the blankets, kisses him, murmurs his apologies, and settles back into the chair at their bedside.

Funny, how this is how their relationship began.

Not so funny, that Ed is more and more scared every day that this will be how it ends.

And then his gaze lands on the bucket, the chunky, nasty contents within. And he realizes that there's less in there than what Ed fed him. That what is in there looks pretty thoroughly broken down. That some of the octopus must have made it into Stede's system. That this is the closest they've ever gotten.

And he has a thought.

Tiny little spark of an idea, and it's completely crazy in direct and opposite proportion to what a long shot it is that this will even work.

But—

Well, kraken is basically octopus, with some added human vitality, some extra fat from the part of Ed that's a mammal, and a little secret sauce on top from Ed doesn't know what, if it's magic, or some sea god shit, or something more arcane than even that, but—

They've tried everything else.

Kraken meat could be worth the shot.

And for Stede, well, he could ask to take a bite out of Ed's human arm and Ed would hand himself over without a second thought. To give him a bit of the kraken, yeah, it's not even a question.

He wakes again, a little groggy, definitely sticky and achey and a bit too warm, his face mashed into the other Stede’s shoulder — the sun has risen past the window, and from the reflections of the light it’s at least midmorning.

“Well that was a nice nap,” Albatross says.

“Yes.” He stretches, little pops in his neck and back, easing out the muscles in his arms and thighs, gently moving around the still painful stitches below his collarbone. He feels a new kind of ease: in himself, and with this other version of himself. “Thank you,” he adds, because it feels important.

Stede can see him on the verge of self-deprecation, and then the swerve, the satisfied smile, the sly tone in his voice when he says, “No, thank you.” Pleased with himself, and Stede’s glad to see it.

Must have skills and access including but not limited to obtaining a duplicate corpse, lying, misdemeanor level fraud, and a general spirit for malfeasance. Excerpt from the story:

"So," Ed says, swiping crumbs out of his beard. "No offense, but a public place might not really be the best place to talk business."

To Ed's surprise, Stede immediately agrees. "Oh, no, of course not. But I had no intentions of talking business just yet."

"Huh?"

"Well, it's sort of a big ask, isn't it? Whoever assists me with my 'project' as it were is someone I'll have to have a great deal of close contact with. And, what's more, once the project is complete, they'll be the only person I really know. And! Of course! I have no expectations that you maintain contact after the project is complete! But, well… You never know?" Stede ends with a hopeful little glance that makes Ed feel insane for how quickly and easily it pulls at his heartstrings, makes him want to promise Stede everything and forever.

"So," Stede continues. "This meeting is simply to get to know you! See if we're compatible! Enjoy some company and some tasty pastries! Business will come later."

Ed blinks. Wonders if Stede knows he's describing a date, though, in fairness, it's not like Ed has a lot of non-theoretical experience in that area. And in even further fairness, Ed is actually totally fine if this is a date. See above about this Stede guy being hot, and also having excellent taste in pastries and suits and hair care, and also this little dimple that keeps peeking out every time he edges towards a smile. So, yeah, let it be sort of a date, let Stede figure that out at his own pace, this is definitely not the first time Ed has desperately tried to inject some pleasure into the bullshit that is his business.

Ed thinks, and thinks, and thinks about trying to actually have some fucking fun with someone who knows how he ticks, and doesn't want him dead, doesn't want himself dead, not anymore, someone who wants to play as badly as Ed wants to play, and going to bed tonight with another body warming the fuck-off big bed a much more optimistic Ed had bought himself way back when, and he smirks, flips his hands, and repins the Kraken's wrists.

The morning dawns clear and bright, and with the rising sun flooding the cabin windows in the bed nook. Golden light wakes him, slowly easing out of sleep, on his back with his other self’s arms wrapped around him, hands warm and heavy even through his shirt. He watches himself sleep: the furrow between his brows, the way he mutters softly, the twitch of his eyelids and his pale lashes.

All lit by this same golden light, the way it gilds his hair, and for once he’s not with himself and wishing it were Ed. He’s with himself and he can almost imagine Ed being in his place instead. What Ed would see, if he were the one sitting in this bunk watching him sleep. Whatever it was that Ed saw and felt when he thought to kiss this Stede on that beach.

He looks at himself with Ed’s love, and he doesn’t know what that is, it’s not like Ed confessed feelings to him, but he knows the feelings exist. Now, in the quiet of the morning, after everything they’d both said, after the breaking of the crisis: he can almost imagine what it might be.
