The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) statement on OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical documents just dropped! www.ahmath.org/statements
AHM Statement on OpenAI’s October 6 Release of Mathematical Documents

Yesterday, on October 6th, 2026, OpenAI – which is currently defending lawsuits against accusations of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution – released a repository of manuscripts purporting to contain solutions to a number of high-profile problems in mathematics.

Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, from whom OpenAI has claimed to derive its legitimacy, opened their initial advisory statement by saying that frontier AI corporations should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. In ignoring the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, OpenAI has indicated total disregard for the norms of scientific research — norms that guarantee that mathematics remains trustworthy, ethically researched, and in the public interest.

Mathematicians have a particular vision of progress that is informed by history and field-specific considerations. We reject OpenAI's assertion that this release advances our subject, and we urge mathematicians and the public to view the value of this publication model with due skepticism.

Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding.

From any basic considerations about automation its clear that everything these companies have done and everything they are trying to do should be banned. There are other paths for AI (including other paths to advanced math tools) but this industry needs to be shut down.

I know I've said this before, but OpenAI and Anthropic should not be allowed to go public. Nor should they be allowed to borrow from the open debt markets. They present an unacceptable risk to investors and lenders, and they need cash at a dangerous scale. www.wheresyoured.at/credit-crunch/
I realize I’ve gone through a lot of technical stuff so far, but the reality is pretty simple: Anthropic and OpenAI do not resemble the financial condition of any company I could find in the history of the stock market outside of WeWork. They are unprofitable, unsustainable, and the only conditions under which they could raise significant debt would involve catastrophic failures of regulatory and ratings bodies.

Sidenote: When WeWork tapped the bond markets in 2018, it received ratings of B (from S&P) and BB- (from Fitch). Both sit below the BBB- threshold for investment-grade debt.

And while WeWork resembles OpenAI and Anthropic, insofar as it didn’t actually own any of the workplaces it rented out to freelancers and startups, it differs in how much it wanted to borrow, seeking only $500m, and the fact that WeWork had a fairly diversified customer base, which is something that (as mentioned) credit ratings, but especially S&P, tend to look favorably on. I’ll add that the only thing worse than allowing them to go public will be to allow them to raise debt at anything other than the junkiest levels that the market has to offer. These are not stable businesses, nor are they run with much regard for their underlying capital or employees. Both of them have massive amounts of concentration risk, unstable customers, brittle economics, own virtually no assets, and have demonstrated little to no ability to reduce their costs outside of questionable accounting that doesn’t change the fact that they cannot afford their bills.

As a result of their $1.3 trillion in compute commitments, neither company can become “capital efficient” by cutting their training costs, because said training costs are the only means of further growth outside of massive price increases that are unlikely to grow their businesses. To make matters worse, both are cutting prices to compete with each other, and per Ramp, said price cuts aren’t increasing usage:

Neither company can afford to exist without near-infinite resources, and neither company can afford to slow down due to their massive compute commitments, which have become materially linked to the future growth trajectories of effectively every hyperscaler, as well as Broadcom, which — in pursuit of becoming NVIDIA — has added ruinous amounts of debt at the worst time in history to do so.

And that’s really the biggest problem here.

Per Reuters, Anthropic has $252 billion in non-cancelable compute obligations across Microsoft, Google and Amazon, and $161.2 billion in Broadcom TPU lease obligations that are "largely non-cancelable". Truly insane. $413 billion in non-cancelable contracts. www.reuters.com/business/ant...
The company said it plans to spend at least $111.1 billion with Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Google, $110 billion with Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab and $31.4 billion with Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab under long-term infrastructure service obligations over the next seven to 10 years "regardless of usage."
Anthropic is separately carrying about $161.2 billion of Broadcom (AVGO.O), opens new tab-related equipment lease obligations that are largely non-cancelable, according to the prospectus. Anthropic filed for an IPO confidentially with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June but its paperwork has not been publicly disclosed.
Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the filing.
The company said it committed to pay Google between April 2026 and July 2033 and Amazon between May 2026 and April 2036.
"If our actual spend falls short, we must pay Google the difference," the company said, adding that similar terms apply to its Amazon agreement.
It added its commitment with Microsoft of $31.4 billion between November 2026 and May 2033 "is non-cancelable except in the event of Microsoft's uncured material breach."

Yes, Al will change our lives (for the better l trust) and down the road it may well unleash a productivity miracle that raises the economy's non-inflationary speed limit enough to keep the world's mounting debt burden sustainable. But until then the buildout is inflationary with an unknown return for the companies who are investing trillions into compute. The demand fo capital (equity and debt) from corporates is rising at a $3.3 trillion clip.
