As someone who actually works in AI, the reality is the big models are neat, but they are overkill for most things. Sonnet is probably their most profitable model. The big money at this point isn't making a really powerful super intelligence but making the good enough models faster and cheaper.

I find these complaints bizarre. "Why didn't they just say lie?" Because they assumed their readers were smart enough to figure that out. And since you seemed to have somehow sussed it out, it seems they were right. Not all writing has to be painfully on the nose.

Worth bearing in mind that illegal entry is a misdemeanor and being unlawfully present in the country is not even a criminal offense, but a civil one. This is the equivalent of saying we need to torch the Constitution & send in the SWAT team to catch jaywalkers & people with overdue library books.

I know a lot of people don't want to hear this, but it needs to be said. Testosterone influences muscle development. That means biological males have a physical advantage over biological females despite what social roles they wish to adopt. We can respect trans people while still recognizing this.

How Large Does a Large Language Model Need To Be?
Large language models can have billions, or even trillions, of parameters. But how big do they need to be to achieve acceptable performance? To test this, I experimented with several of Google's Gemma 3 models, all small enough to run locally on a single GPU. Specifically I used the 1 billion parameter model, the 4 billion parameter model, and the 12 billion parameter model.

This is deranged. Jan. 6 defendants were repped by one of the best public defender offices in the U.S. They were more likely to be released pretrial & got comparatively light sentences. SCOTUS threw out a bunch of convictions, which almost never happens. They got gold-plated due process!

Making LLMs Useful with Function Calls and Embeddings
Large Language Model AIs like Google's Gemini and Open-AI's GPT can be interesting to play around with even in a simple chatbot like Chat-GPT. But those chatbots largely waste their potential. Their understanding of natural language is impressive, but their "knowledge" is limited to what they were trained on. But that's not the limit of their abilities. By incorporating other data such as external APIs, they can be made much more reliable and effective.

Stocks are soaring because it's always great when someone just stops hitting you with a hammer. But when they stop, the next step is to take the hammer out of their hands. Congress needs to take back its tariff authority. And we need to keep saying it until it happens, in this Congress or the next.

1/🧵 Judges across ideological lines are ruling against Trump at strikingly similar rates (84% liberal, 86% centrist, 82% conservative). This isn't partisan opposition to Trump—it's the judiciary functioning as intended by cutting across partisan lines to uphold the Constitution.
Title: Both Liberal and Conservative Judges Rule Against Trump
Description: A scatter plot showing the rulings of judges against or in favor of Trump, categorized by ideology using the DIME score. The x-axis represents Judge Ideology (DIME Score), ranging from liberal (-1) to conservative (1), and the y-axis represents the case outcome (against or for Trump).
	•	Blue dots represent liberal judges, purple dots represent moderate judges, and red dots represent conservative judges.
	•	Some judges are labeled, including Rudolph Contreras, Lauren King, John Coughenour, and James Emanuel Boasberg on the liberal to moderate side, and Carl Nichols, Richard J. Leon, and Joseph N. Laplante on the conservative side.
	•	A note mentions that Boasberg, though slightly right-leaning, was initially appointed by George W. Bush.
	•	The visualization suggests that judges from both ideological backgrounds ruled against Trump.

If the response to an outbreak of a disease that we eradicated decades ago from the Health and Human Services Secretary is to "arrange ambulance rides", I think it's safe to say the Health and Human Services Department isn't doing a good job.
