A better defense would be: "It wasn't a strong case. The first trial ended up with a hung jury and the victim didn't want to testify again. The choice wasn't one day vs years, it was get him to admit to his guilt and have some token punishment vs let him be acquitted."

He was at least kinda trying to uncover the truth. Which, while not great, was miles ahead of people like Vance who just didn't care if it actually happened, they just asserted it to be true.

You don't think they compare prices from different vendors?

I was thinking it was probably just an indication for how rural the state is.

So much of political messaging these days is rooted in the average American voter not understanding basic economics.

Oh and since people won't be able to afford to use a cashier, it would mean lots of workers would lose their jobs.

Nick @nwbvt.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
This wouldn't give a discount for self checkout. This would just increase the cost if you go through the cashier. The price for self checkout would remain the same.

One possibility would be insurance companies themselves creating fake customers and pocketing the subsidies.

No, they agree with the other political positions he takes. And no, there were no allegations that Bob Hugin was corrupt with anything even coming close to the allegations against Memendez.

So I'm no Hegseth fan, but I'll give him the Fort Bragg thing as a win. He was able to keep the name everyone knew (seriously, Fort Liberty had a "Freedom Fries" vibe to it) but named it after a different Bragg who wasn't an incompetent traitor but an actual war hero.

Also note that this isn't a whataboutism argument. I'm not criticizing the people of New Jersey who overwhelmingly voted for him. They made the rational choice to support the corrupt piece of shit who they agreed with politically more than his moderate Republican opponent.

Most people with what I'm guessing is your political persuasion would vote for the obvious crook. Because political positions end up counting for more than personal failings.

Nick @nwbvt.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Hypothetical situation. You have two candidates to vote for. One you know to be an obvious crook. And the other is a Trump acolyte who supports throwing Hispanics on concentration camps until they prove they are legal. Who do you vote for?

Hopefully Paxton doesn't see that and decide to get a swastika tattoo and then go rape a college student... That started as a joke but the more I think about it, it is a real concern.

"Why didn't old TV shows like Star Trek cover controversial issues like modern shows such as Dancing With The Stars and The Great British Bake Off?"

Nick @nwbvt.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
The nicest interpretation of this is to say entertainment media didn't care about issues people today care about because they were too caring about issues people back then cared about. "Why are they dedicating so much time to the threat of nuclear war and not trans collegiate swimmers?"

Please tell me this was some sort of philological think piece where you are intentionally looking at a position from the point of view of the worst person possible in order to gain an interesting perspective.

That's pretty common. "My economic situation" usually polls better than "the economy in general". Whether that's more because people are overly worried about what they see in the news or in denial about their own finances is an open question.
