#MathsToday Implications & quantifiers in Discrete. Drawing truth sets and using those to think about implications went well, but I didn't stick the landing on connecting to contrapositive. We'll come back to it. Good start on quantifiers (using an activity from a POGIL colleague), more on Thurs!

#MathsToday Kicked off a team project in Stat Analysis. This is a different structure than I've used before, so I'm nervous, and teams made very different amounts of progress today. We'll see how the descriptive analysis stage goes!

I was at Alumni Weekend at my undergrad last weekend, and I am always amazed that this tiny, still-young, engineering-only school has managed to produce at least three statistics faculty. So we got a photo of all of us! Me ('16), Jerzy Wieczorek ('06), and Zach del Rosario ('14)

By this definition emergency management has no role in mitigation and recovery and also excludes from response groups like the Red Cross, utility companies, public health, hospital/ university emergency management, etc.
Purpose: Emergency Management requires consistency and alignment with mission
requirements as well as the legal framework of existing authorities. Until now, the field has
struggled to articulate the scope of work, which has diluted our credibility, capability, and
professional development. This memorandum solidifies the definition of Emergency
Management as well as core characteristics of Emergency Management as a profession.
Background: FEMA describes Emergency Management as “the strategic coordination of
emergency services to protect life, property, and continuity of operations.” This definition
establishes a clear scope for emergency management and provides a common foundation for the
profession.
Over time, the field of emergency management has expanded well beyond its original
operational purpose, evolving to include new programs, responsibilities, priorities, and
expectations, driven in large part by the solution-oriented approach of professionals working in
crisis response. Despite this growth, operational and functional characteristics should guide what
is appropriately included within the broader emergency management mission space.

My other #MathsToday note -- four of my math or data advisees came to eat snacks, talk, and play SET, and I'm so glad I have enough advisees to organize advising family events.

#MathsToday I gave my Discrete students a problem set this week that was much too hard. But today, we went through them part by part, and it ended up feeling pretty good! Two parts I set aside as too much for now, but I was proud of how they reasoned through the rest with better scaffolding.

#MathsToday Permutations in Discrete with a new POGIL activity from a colleague. Students gave useful feedback! Solid foundation; will need more practice. My colleague Gerry Higdon gave his 1st in a series of 6 seminars this year. Lots of excellent sequences and series! I'm excited for the rest.

Seeing Jupiter - From NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/28WdFrD
This image of Jupiter's southern hemisphere was captured by NASA's Juno spacecraft on the outbound leg of a close flyby of the gas-giant planet. Citizen scientist Kevin M. Gill created this image using data from the spacecraft's JunoCam imager.

The color-enhanced image was taken at 11:31 p.m. PDT on May 23, 2018 (2:31 a.m. EDT on May 24), as the spacecraft performed its 13th close flyby of Jupiter. At the time, Juno was about 44,300 miles (71,400 kilometers) from the planet's cloud tops, above a southern latitude of 71 degrees.

JunoCam takes advantage of Juno's unique polar orbit, studying the atmospheric dynamics and clouds right up to Jupiter's poles, which no spacecraft has ever done before.

Second was color triangles. We had less time for this one, but lots of students figured out the case with 3 dots in the top row! (I'm confused by the JRMF prompts because to my knowledge "nice" solutions only exist for 4, 10, 28, etc. starting dots, but I could be wrong?)

#MathsToday: A couple more explorations from Julia Robinson Math Festival in Discrete. First was colored loops! The best discussion was about how many colors loops need if the arrows all have the same number. There are other (better?) ways to get at that idea, so leaving my future self that note.

An Intersection of Land, Ice, Sea and Clouds - From NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/23p2SFp
As sea ice at far northern latitudes approached its annual maximum extent, the Terra satellite captured this natural-color image of sea ice and clouds off of Canada’s Newfoundland and Labrador province. Though sea ice has been significantly below normal extent and thickness across much of the Arctic, the ice in the Labrador Sea has been relatively close to normal.

In this image, acquired on Feb. 18, 2018, the coastline, the sea ice edge, and offshore clouds all present a clear edge to distinguish one from the next. Ice hugs the coast, where it receives the full chilling effect of offshore winds, and the water is shallower and fresher than in the open sea. The swirl patterns on the eastern edges reveal areas where ice is new and has not yet consolidated into a solid sheet, so it is more susceptible to stirring by winds and by ocean eddies.
