Happy to have contributed to Chapter 5 "The Arctic" in a section led by @drahbutler.bsky.social – featuring some discussion of an unusually early final stratospheric warming for winter 2024/25 and an unusually early sudden stratospheric warming for winter 2025/26! doi.org/10.1175/BAMS...

A new Science study has revealed a hidden population of extremely small, organic-rich aerosol particles in the lower stratosphere. The findings suggest that these ultrafine aerosols are far more abundant and chemically influential than previously understood. scim.ag/4u9OFPj

An unrecognized mode of small particles in the lower stratosphere
Analysis of recent in situ data reveals a persistent mode of organic-rich aerosol particles in the stratosphere below 19 kilometers at nitrous oxide (N2O) > 270 parts per billion by volume, with a num...

Loss of the aging ACE-FTS and MLS satellite instruments will create a “data desert” around stratospheric composition, suggests a paper by @rosssalawitch.bsky.social et al in #BulletinAMS. Observation gaps may hinder understanding of climate change. Read more: bit.ly/41JORtl

An early but interesting end to the 2024-25 polar vortex season
After spending much of the season with super strong wind speeds, the polar vortex bowed out two weeks ago, with the core west-to-east winds sliding off the pole. However, as it winds down for the seas...

I've made a starter pack of people who work on the stratosphere/middle atmosphere and/or often post about the stratosphere, including forecasts of the polar vortex. Please do suggest anyone I've missed – quite hard to keep up with everyone on here now! go.bsky.app/MxwzdEi
