I've been again exploring ways to make public information and data a bit more accessible. Enrolment and turnout is a big issue this election and a lot of organisations have been working to get as many people enrolled as possible. #nzpol So we made: vote.inzight.co.nz
vote.inzight.co.nz
Voting and enrolment rights in New Zealand
Enrolment and voting information for people in various situations in New Zealand.

This is the week in my intro data science course where students learn that runif() is said r-unif not run-if, & they are like "duh" but no one had ever said it out loud before so they didn't know. Def read/watch more about this from @amelia.mn & of course @felienne.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy, links⬇️

At @statsuoa.bsky.social, we've been exploring scaffolded code interactions ("code blanks") to support positive first experiences with code while encouraging curiosity, tinkering, and exploration with data. For a short summary, watch my short #eCOTS video here 😀: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qIE...

Spent the day promoting Census at School Canada at a BC Math Teachers conference (BCAMT). Census at School is a program for K-12 students to take a survey & analyze data about themselves! Its free, easy to use & very engaging, making it fun for students & teachers (and parents). 🔗 censusatschool.ca

I had a great time at #USCOTS (United States Conference on Teaching Statistics) earlier this month, attending in person for the first time. I was also grateful to give the keynote for the research satellite, about how I am trying to navigate the sea of statistics and data science education research.
An image of me in a boat with a cat, a laptop with the R logo, and the NZ flag, sailing through the sea, representing the outline of the talk that focused on where to travel, what route to take, who to travel with, how to spend my time, how to fund my travel and what photos to share.

At the USCOTS opening session, someone asked me if I know about the Reddit featuring maps without New Zealand. Next thing, someone shows a map showing where everyone has come from for the conference ….. guess what was missing 🤣🤣🤣

Maybe I should feature more dogs than cats in my research? Because my paper on using grayscale photos (of dogs) to introduce reasoning with digital image data won the 2024 ASA Jackie Dietz Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education Best Paper Award 🎉 www.tandfonline.com/journals/ujs...

I got to give a talk on our R package in the birthplace of #rstats 😊 Thank you for the opportunity @annafergusson.bsky.social Slides: mdogucu.github.io/auckland-2024/

I'm trying to finish my slides for a CAUSE webinar on using grayscale photos to introduce high school teachers to reasoning with digital image data (www.causeweb.org/cause/webina...), but my cat is not giving consent for his image to be used - lucky he can't read the paper! #statsed #datascied

@annafergusson.bsky.social asked students to draw what they thought data science looks like and I feel so simultaneously sympathetic and attacked by the person who drew Squidward #rstats 📊
A collection of simple line drawings of bar plots, and line plots, and numbers. There are around 16 in the photo. In the middle is a drawing of Squidward in front of a laptop. Squidward looks sad and grumpy like he always does

Six years ago, I had just finished the first semester of designing and teaching a new intro statistics and data science course. One of the many new teaching activities I created was one using grayscale photos to introduce and reinforce concepts related to data distributions. 🐱 🐶 📊 💻
A photo of a cat in colour and then in grayscale, with four plots showing the distribution of grayscale pixels for increasing sample sizes.

Has it ever been a thing that when a journal asks you to review a paper, that in addition to the abstract, they tell you how many pages it is? 😀

On the lookout for recent #biostats publications with (nice) open data for use in a postgrad biostats. Anything from (g)lm(m) to PCA, LDA... I have my usual data deps and journals to peruse but am keen to find more, esp. outside ecology and environment. #EduSky #TidyTuesday Suggestions and RP 🙏
