1/ 🏨 Too many aparthotels?Too much student accommodation? Worried about the loss of homes to short-term lets? Here’s the important bit: by the time a planning application arrives, the rules it will be judged against will already have been written. That’s why CITY PLAN 2040 matters.

Looks as if they (Edinburgh Council) are planning for a prolonged outage ? We have had no further communication on this & unaware of any works to resolve. This is far from satisfactory (....an understatement).

Really hard to understand why someone would do this in the first place - a better understanding of the cause is key to reducing incidences such as this. Credit to @caltonhill.bsky.social for raising the issue & for @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social for removing expediently.

Thanks - yes - very helpful. It may be that the replacement trees will require increased attention (water) initially to get them established but sure this could be arranged. It would be a real pity (& quite embarrassing) if the replacements suffered the same fate as their predecessors.

New Town & Broughton Community Council @ntbcc.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
A 'Top Up' tap' would be a useful addition here - there's also a suggestion that (at last) Edinburgh Council (CEC) may actually replace the 4 (at the time of posting) dead trees in the next month or so - this would demonstrate a semblance of commitment by CEC to this neglected public realm.

Agree the current building there has clearly reached end-of-life & there was a growing expectation a redevelopment scheme would be brought forwards. However, whilst the replacement is functional & the use there is fully supported, it's actually a scheme that lacks ambition ? @spurtle.bsky.social

Agree the Spurtle's overview is helpful - summarising the discussion at last night's NTBCC meeting. Of the 1348 documents, over 900 are the objection comments (which the Council's system (un)helpfully includes twice...) - even so, still a huge undertaking for people to assimilate.

Although there's a draft recommendation to approve, the application will go before the DM Sub-committee on 17 December for determination. This will allow an opportunity for local residents & other amenity organisations to voice their concerns to elected Councillors before a final decision. (2/2)
