Work finished for the day; currently watching Wong Kar Wai's 'In the Mood For Love' and letting out an audible yelp every time a new qipao comes into shot. Jesus the LOOKS in this thing

After a networking event yesterday, I think I'm no longer allowing strangers to respond to me telling them what I do for a living by saying 'Are you worried about AI?'. Buddy, we've just met, and your idea of small talk is 'You strike me as replaceable. What's up with that?'. No thanks.

@devononearth.bsky.social As a KJB listener, my particular brand of parasociality seems to be that I have a li'l Dev in my head who gets activated by powerful fits in movies - esp. 70s movies, Senegalese movies, and 70s Senegalese movies. I say this now, because I'm watching Touki-Bouki and BEHOLD
Screenshot from 'Touki-Bouki'. Set against a blue sky, a man is wearing a bright yellow tartan coat/jacket with large lapels, a purple vest, red neckerchief and big sunglasses. The subtitles read 'I get it.'Another screenshot: the lower half of the outfit. Standing astride a fallen motorbike with a cow's skull strapped to the handlebars, he is wearing tight flared trousers - olive with various vertical stripes of red, orange and white.

Realised that trees can act like a pinhole viewer for the eclipse, so I popped out and did a little self-portrait shoot in lighting that won't happen again until I'm 92

Perhaps the unlikeliest of comedy sketches to crop up in 2026, but also one of the funniest:

'We have seen, in the context of propaganda, how subtly and how insistently the enemy seeks to engender tension and confusion. Quotation from the enemy is thus a service to the enemy.' (from 'Radio in Wartime' by Charles Siepmann)
1. In war, more even than in peace, we look to radio first and foremost for news. The wartime requirements of a radio news service are (a) authenticity. Immediacy is less important. To sacrifice authenticity in the interest of a scoop is dangerous. We are used to the scare headlines of the press. Radio's equivalent of headlines (sensational tone and overdramatic presentation) are even more dangerous because of radio's hold on the listener's imagination. We need no fuel for the flames of our anxiety. We have seen, in the context of propaganda, how subtly and how insistently the enemy seeks to engender tension and confusion. Quotation from the enemy is thus a service to the enemy.

(b) We rely on radio not only for authentic news, but for perspective. To highlight minor incidents is to breed misunderstanding and false hopes. The needs of wartime in this respect are not different from those of peace. They are simply greater.

Have you found yourself in the position of having a Reform councillor?

Here’s how you can help your brand new councillor settle into local government properly: email them this week with an actual council problem to solve.

Got rubbish piling up? Email them.

Bus vanished from existence? Email them.

Streetlights dead? Email them.

Care package delayed? Email them.

Pavement like the Somme? Email them.

Send them in by the hundred. Make sure they’re made very clear on what their job is.

Being a councillor is not standing in front of the Union flag shouting about dinghies on GB News. It’s reading committee papers at midnight, attending meetings nobody enjoys, holding surgeries in church halls, and dealing with the endlessly glamorous world of drains, social care budgets and recycling disputes.

Welcome to local government.

The boats are in Kent. The bins are in your ward.

The email address for your ward councillor can be found on your local council website as soon as it’s updated.

Feel free to copy and paste to share wider.

I've been following the output of The Folk Union for a while now (prob thanks to @folklondon.co.uk) and it's definitely done a fair bit in terms of challenging, clarifying and galvanising my thoughts on folk music. If nothing else, read the paper linked here thefolkunion.com/folk-the-spe...

How can I fight fascism if I get anxious asking for my reserved seat on the train?
Red gyms, the sermon on the mount, anarchist callisthenics. What does living out our values look like in an anxiety epidemic?

As an avowed hater of UI bloat, I've just discovered a joyous thing: a Chrome extension called 'Custom CSS by Denis' that, as the name suggests, allows you to add custom CSS when on a given domain.

I’ve worked at the Southbank Centre for over 8 years now. In that time I’ve become desensitised to mad conversations that wouldn’t happen anywhere else. But in my first few years I noted down ‘overhead’ snippets that would be ridiculous in any other setting. I’ve just found those notes. Strap in.
A summer evening at the Southbank Centre; a couple sit on steps in the shadow of the Royal Festival Hall; a man looks over a wall to the level below. The golden sunlight catches the concrete facade of the Queen Elizabeth Hall. People can be seen climbing the yellow steps to the roof garden, the water of the terrace fountain is forming a spray in the sunshine.
