Went to hospital on Monday. Thought I was just calling in for a blood test; got home two hours ago. Hospitals are grim places, for many reasons, but bloody hell the nurses and staff that work there are incredible human beings. Now to hope Wales don't make me wish I'd been kept in another night.

The Cymru Premier is gloriously surreal. There’s spare goals along one touchline, a beer garden behind the goal, a ballboy just fetched a ball while drinking a can of pop, this was my match ticket, and yet we’ve also just had a two minute wait for a VAR decision.
A small tear-off raffle/fairground ticket with ‘Admit One’ printed on it held in front of an astroturf football field.

Me, interrupting: "Wait, wait, so the party is led by a seemingly above-the-law private-school-educated ex-city trader with a multi-millionaire property tycoon as his deputy, and they've received £72million in donations from billionaire businessmen... and they're not 'the elites'?"

How philosophical was Phil Parkinson to begin with? ‘Phil, difficult night, your thoughts on that defeat?’ ‘Was in not Sartre who said existence precedes essence?’

I remain terrible at self-promotion so here's a burst of recent writing that I'm pretty pleased with. Firstly, the latest instalment of my Southbank Centre Artist on Artist series, for which I sat down with composer Jasmin Kent Rodgman to talk about a lot of things, but chiefly Steve Reich

AI scares me. In many ways. One of them is the impact it will have, and is having, on art and creativity. So I tried to get some assurances from people who know more about it than me that it isn’t all bad. And only kind of did.

Either the BBC News site is running low on sub-editors, or Casualty actor William Beck really was born on an uninhabited island off the coast of Ynys Môn and, presumably, raised by seabirds (fourth paragraph).

Somewhere, between Crewe and Stafford, there’s a pathway that leads from beneath the railway off into some woods. I see it every time I go to London, and have wondered why I always happen to be looking out the window at that point. Is it fate? Does this path carry some deep significance for me?

Classic Southbank Centre moment in the Hayward Gallery at the weekend... Some cuts of plasterboard had been left by a public lift entrance as a works lift was out of service. Several visitors to the exhibition duly mistook this pile for another of Anish Kapoor's works and paused to contemplate it.

Colwyn Bay is another country. Be careful out there.
A poster taped to a bus stop in Old Colwyn that reads: ‘URGENT PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE! Announcement: On 20 August 2026 one of our hippopotami BREACHED CONTAINMENT. (Last sighting in "The Dingle" River)

While his whereabouts remain unverified, the breach took place in the Colwyn Bay vicinity.

Sunday was a good day. Long schlep in the Carneddau to the summit of Tal-y-Fan and back from Deganwy. Finally, at the sixth time of trying, got to visit Llangelynin Old Church with no-one else about, had the summit to myself, then got my favourite seat in The Albion. Mark it up as a big W.

The other week I checked into a Doncaster Lakeside hotel. It was the height of the heatwave. I had shorts on. The hotel had no air-con. The poor receptionist was melting as he apologised for the inevitable daft heat in my room. Then as I turned for the lift he said ‘still, nice leg view at least’

Of course, buses, that famously middle and upper class mode of travel.
An excerpt from a BBC 'Your Voice' segment on Prime Minister Andy Burnham's proposed bus price cap which reads 'Mark Tait, who lives near Durham, tells the BBC the bus fare cap will make little difference to him.

"This is great if you use the bus, but no good for those who drive. Yet again, the working class person is left out," Tait says.'

Huge respect to Y Gwasanaeth Tân who’ve somehow managed to bring the wildfire on Sychnant Pass above Dwgyfylchi and Conwy under control. Could see how quickly the fire was spreading from here (5 miles away) yesterday evening. Incredible effort to get control of it in the warm wind we’ve had today.
