The CHC Haunt-along continues! Today we're going to talk about the Russian supernatural horror film VIY! It's the story of a young seminarian who's forced into a three day face-off with the forces of darkness.

Zoe Renee does a lot to ground the humanity. In the early parts, whenever things start to get a little bit strange Candace wrestles them back. Sometimes with a really beautiful monologue about how Jayson wrangled the stars for his child and sometimes by pointing out that hippies love stars and shit.

As the movie progresses, the childbirth gets WEIRD and it is easy for everyone to react accordingly, but in the first two acts while things are just a little unusual Colleen Foy manages to make every little oddity feel important and really ramps the tension.

When you have a cast this small it puts a lot of pressure to deliver on all the actors. In Goody Goody everybody delivers. I love the way they each approach their character, but Zoe Renee and Colleen Foy are particular standouts. Their back and forth controls the tension for most of the movie.

Creamer makes the claustrophobia of the movie palpable. There’s a great scene early on where Candace puts on a record and begins to dance. While the music plays it is too loud and all the shots turn to close-ups. It is a great human moment but also lets you know just how closed in they are.

I’m really impressed with how much this movie does in its sparseness. There’s 4 actors, 1 set, and a straightforward premise. Goody Goody uses its set pieces really well and manages its tension terrifically.

There are some worrying things early in the pregnancy, but as the movie progresses what Goody is pregnant with and who the father is begin to be called into question.

Something is strange about Goody from the start. Most of the movie is set at the cabin, but we get a brief flashback to Sarah trying to convince Goody to do the homebirth in the city. After a dream reveals that Goody is going to the cabin no matter what, Sarah reluctantly agrees to go with them.

Obviously that’s not it, but it is a simple set up and a lean cast, but wow does Goody Goody make the most of what it’s got. We’ll get a little bit into spoilers beyond here, so if you want to avoid those from here just go watch it. I think it is a really good addition to the possession canon.

They hire a midwife, Sarah (Colleen Foy), who would rather they not try to do a homebirth deep in the woods during a snow storm, but eventually she relents. They bring Jayson’s sister, Candace (Zoe Renee), along to assist. That’s it. That’s the set up and the full cast.

Beyond the acting, there are some really great sequences inside the doll house that are deeply unsettling. The effects are hit or miss, but there are a few really solid transformation sequences. Daniel Isn’t Real is a really unique take on the possession genre and worth checking out.

Luke and Daniel play off each other really well. The scenes between them are genuinely compelling. They start out fun and often tender, but transform into something dark and heavy. The scenes with Cassie, where Daniel takes on a strange Cyrano type role, are particularly interesting.

Sasha Lane as Cassie, the artist Luke starts dating, is great as the grounded, but still confident, alternative to Daniel’s razor sharp danger. Her earnestness makes Luke's healthier shifts in the movie really believable.

I don’t have sources to cite, but I’d wager that Daniel Isn’t Real is how Patrick Schwarzenegger (Daniel) ended up in the role of Saxon in White Lotus. His charm, smarm, and danger are palpable in every scene.

Miles Robbins (Luke) is fantastic. I’m a sucker for movies where a character changes drastically and the actor has to reckon with that. It goes back to my childhood love of The Mask and Face/Off. Luke’s personality shifts majorly a few times in the movie and Miles navigates them all really well.

As Luke’s life begins to get more exciting and he gains some confidence, Daniel becomes less content watching from the sidelines. Luckily he learns how to take the wheel from time to time. From there things start to get real wild and Luke needs to figure out who Daniel really is.
