"In Canada, every provincial premier, of every political stripe, is guilty of adhering to the new climate denialism. It is now clear, however, that today, our country’s leading practitioner is Prime Minster Mark Carney." #CdnPoli
The essence of the idea is this: while conventional climate denialism simply refuses to accept the reality of human-induced climate change (think Donald Trump), this new form of denialism sees our political leaders assure us they understand and accept the scientific warnings about climate change — but they are in denial about what this scientific reality means for policy and/or continue to block progress in less visible ways. Others, perhaps more kindly, call this “all-the-above policy-making,” the inclination of political leaders to tell the public that we need not make hard choices. Whatever term one uses, the result is the continuing sorry state of Canadian political non-leadership on the defining challenge of our time.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

By taxing the richest 0.3% of Canadians, some 133,000 people, we could raise $1 billion per year to go towards fixing our broken healthcare system, building affordable housing, or creating a national public grocery network to drive down the cost of groceries. No selling of our airports required.

It was very funny when the New York Times put a question along this line to Astra Taylor and Naomi Klein in a recent interview and, as he sheepishly built himself up to actually asking it, the camera flipped to them. Their expressions were perfect reflections of how I also felt in that moment.
Image of the New York Times journalist from the YouTube video of "The Interview" episode with Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor titled: "Is the End of the World Now on the Table | The Interview"

The subtitle in the image reads: "know, when you use such severe language or or harsh language, do"Image of the New York Times journalist from the YouTube video of "The Interview" episode with Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor titled: "Is the End of the World Now on the Table | The Interview"

The subtitle in the image reads: "you maybe risk just pushing people into their respective corners? and"Image of Astra Taylor and Naomi Klein sitting on a couch with zero hint of a smile on either of their faces as they listen to the new york times journalist basically sheepishly ask if they're risking their ideas being dismissed when they use words like "fascism"

The subtitle on screen reads "spade a spade. And yet, I want to ask you a version of that"
