When I read Chalion's Curse by the great Lois McMaster Bujold, this is what I was seeing in my head when they talked about Cardegoss:
A medieval stone castle set on a rocky outcrop above a river with a town at a much lower elevation in the background.

Syphilis and gonnorrhea were basically incurable before the late 1930s and the 1940s. At times in Dynastic China there were imperial awards to people for living into their 70s/80s. And of, say, 5 kids 2 or so would likely die before adulthood & childbirth often killed women.

Finally finished the #NilsStureshirt. Notice the length difference, and in the 3rd Pic how with the arm raised the wrist cuff doesn't slide down the forearm, and in the 4th the difference in the ruffs
Composite picture, on the left a handmade reconstruction of a 16th century shirt. The shirt goes down to the knees, and has full ruffs at wrists and collar. The store bought shirt on the right barely goes down to the hips and the wrist and collar ruffs are much simpler Back views of a handmade 16th century shirt on the left and the store bought one on the right, again highlighting the difference in length and ruff fullness Picture of the shirts worn with an arm raised. On the left the handmade shirt, with no arm showing. The wrist cuff is at the wrist. On the right the wrist cuff is several inches down the forearm, Closeup of the upper chest and head highlighting the difference in fullness of the collar ruffs between the reproduction shirt on the left and the store bought shirt on the right. On the left the ruff is full enough and heavy enough it falls to a horizontal position, the collar ruff on the store bought shirt on the right maintains a more vertical orientation.

Mid‑Century 19¢ Box Mix‑Style Brownies (11¢ On Sale)
Ingredients
Dry Mix Base
1 cup (125 g) all‑purpose flour
¾ cup (150 g) granulated beet sugar
½ cup (45 g) unsweetened cocoa powder (natural cocoa is more era‑accurate; Dutch‑process works too)
½ tsp (3 g) baking powder
¼ tsp (2 g) salt
To Prepare the Brownies
1 cup (180 g) dry mix
1 large egg
¼ cup (60 ml) vegetable oil
2 tbsp (30 ml) water (optional for softer, more cake‑leaning texture)
Optional Chocolate Frosting Mix
1 cup (120 g) powdered beet sugar
2 tbsp (12 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tbsp (30 ml) whole milk
1 tbsp (15 g) soft unsalted butter
½ tsp (2 ml) vanilla extract
Pinch salt
OR Optional Sugar‑Shell Frosting
1 cup (120 g) powdered beet sugar
2 tbsp (30 ml) milk
1 tbsp (15 g) soft butter
½ tsp (2 ml) vanilla
Method
Make the Mix
Whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
Store in an airtight container up to 3 months.
Prepare and Bake
Preheat oven to 350 °F (175 °C).
Grease an 8×8 in (20×20 cm) pan.
Combine dry mix, egg, and oil.
Stir exactly 50 strokes by hand; batter should remain lumpy for authentic chew.
Spread into pan; batter will be thick.
Bake 20–25 minutes until edges set and center is just barely firm.
Cool completely before cutting.
Make the Optional Chocolate Frosting Mix
Whisk powdered sugar, cocoa, and salt until uniform.
Add milk, butter, and vanilla; stir until glossy and smooth.
Adjust texture:
Too thick → add milk by the teaspoon
Too thin → add powdered sugar
Spread a thin layer over cooled brownies.
Sets into a soft sugar shell in 10–15 minutes.
OR Make the Optional Sugar‑Shell Frosting
Whisk all ingredients until smooth.
Spread thinly over cooled brownies.
Let stand until the surface hardens into a crisp sugar shell.
Serving
Dust with powdered sugar, frost lightly, or leave plain.
Serve with cold milk or black coffee.
Production Notes
Lumpy batter = dense, chewy, box‑mix texture.
Oil keeps moisture and shine.
8×8 pan ensures proper thickness and gooey center.
Natural cocoa gives the most era‑accurate flavor (slightly salt‑forward, deeply chocolatey).
