james7132 @no-bull.sh · 07/10/2026I'm 80% confident that I'll be quitting my job and taking a sabbatical starting in January. I'd like to think I have a high endurance for corporate bullshit, but everyone has limits. 030

james7132 @no-bull.sh · 05/10/2026It really only shows up in BlueSky-compliant AppViews too. If you just query the PDS directly, all of your posts are technically visible to *everyone*, including those you blocked. 000
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 05/10/2026It's a wart from the way ATProto/BlueSky is designed. From a technical perspective, it's because, in ATProto, adding a block is stored on your account, while adding a follow is on their account. Because you're not authorized to make a change to their account, blocking doesn't change that number. 100

james7132 @no-bull.sh · 01/10/2026The question was rhetorical: it's to support even larger KV-caches in even higher parameter count LLMs. Here I thought hardware level FP4 was ill advised, yet here we are again. 010
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 01/10/2026Just read up on the design and intent of HBF (high bandwidth flash), and I feel like I'm smoking the bad shit. Why the hell would you put a *degrading* component on something as high throughput as a GPU??? The cynic in me just sees a planned obsolescence trojan horse to force more GPU sales. 130

james7132 @no-bull.sh · 17/09/2026I do find it *deeply* ironic that the people who aligned themselves against crypto 10 years ago are now on a platform that built itself on web3-original standards (i.e. DIDs). ATProto dev circles are still are a tinge cryptobro adjacent too. 120
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 17/09/2026Just had the displeasure of talking to someone who convinced themselves that generative AI use in games is immoral, but upscalers like Waifu2x are somehow exempt from that category. When I started talking technical specifics, I suddenly get a wall of LLM-speak. I'm fucking done bro, how the fuck. 120
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 15/09/2026At the behest of my therapist and friends, I've picked up the saxophone again after 20 years. The mouth and fingers remember everything, but the brain doesn't, though it's quickly catching up. It's almost like I never stopped. 070
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 12/09/202698+% of the traffic never touches the backing host. That means redirecting a 50x increase in traffic to said host. During spikes, that can easily be 500x more. Even if it's cheaper than the main service, there's simply not enough compute resources to sustain that. 010
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 12/09/2026It'd be hitting 404s much more often if that were the case, it seems like it's scraping as one would expect a crawler, just ignoring rate limit requests and robots.txt. We're hitting ~40-45 QPS on an absolutely tiny VPS, I don't think we have compute to tarpit them. 100
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 11/09/2026It also does not help that MediaWiki is the Embodiment of PHP Devil. Every bad decision from the early 2000s still biting us in the ass 20+ years later. Can we *please* have a layman-accessible wiki that doesn't require choking down decades worth of tech debt? 0101
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 11/09/2026I can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss the days when the worst we had to worry about was some salty asshole from China deciding to throw a few thousand requests per minute. At least that never had a public facing impact on the site and user experience. 181
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 11/09/2026We're getting to the point where these companies are using residential proxies for their scraping activities, so just blocking based on ASN is no longer sufficient, and had to do the nuclear option of putting the entire MediaWiki page render endpoint (/index.php) behind a persistent global bot check 150
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 11/09/2026Looks like *everyone* has been interested in Touhou EoSD: NC, unfortunately including bots and AI scrapers. Leading up to the game's release, there's been a surge in both human and bot traffic to Touhou Wiki, which means yet further tweaking of the anti-bot measures. 2175
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 11/09/2026Hi! I help manage the Touhou Wiki technical infrastructure. This is an bug with our aggressive caching/anti-bot measures to fend of AI scrapers. We recently (as in within the last 48 hours) tried to fix this. I *think* it should be fixed now? 010

james7132 @no-bull.sh · 12/08/2026GDC is notorious for being impossible to afford. I'm a hobbyist game dev in the SF Bay Area, and I haven't been able to go in 10+ years! If I found out that up to 25% of that badge price went to buying me lunch @ $50/day, I'd be absolutely livid. 040
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 12/08/2026It's for these reasons why it's cost prohibitive for hobbyists to participate in these conferences. You *need* to have your company comp your trip, write it off as a business expense, or need to prep actual vacation time and money on attending. 140
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 12/08/2026This is obviously apples to oranges, with TouhouFest being a volunteer-led community-run fan events funded almost entirely off of badge sales, and RustWeek having significantly higher sponsorship funding, but it's still crazy how wasteful some of these industry conferences are. 140
james7132 @no-bull.sh · 12/08/2026Having helped run events for several thousand people with similar if not greater A/V tech needs on a ~$100k USD budget, spending €130k on food for 5 days is unfathomable to me.
