Thanks to my incredible audiobook narrator, Soneela Nankani, whom a childhood friend helped me pick, DATA EMPIRE won an Earphone Award from Kirkus Reviews!
Cover of the book with the little headphone image indicating the award Utterly fascinating.

N
arrator Soneela Nankani ushers
listeners around the globe and
through time in this sweeping survey of how humans use information to understand, interpret, and control.
Author Risam begins her exploration 43,000 years ago and ends it with tantalizing peeks into possible futures.
Ranging back and forth both geographically and temporally, she examines data collection and its use (or misuse) in the 23rd-century B.C.E.
Akkadian Empire, Han-era China, 14th-century C.E. Mali, and elsewhere. Giventhis mammoth scope, the account could easily lose listeners along the way, but Nankani's understated delivery is its perfect vessel. Voice rising and falling naturally, with emotion applied sparingly and skillfully, Nankani allows listeners full access to the argument Risam builds from the data she has so meticulously researched.
Utterly fascinating.

American novelist & short story writer Edith Wharton was the first woman to win the #Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, 1921. She won for her satirical novel set in 1870s high-society New York, The Age of Innocence. She died #OTD in 1937. #literature #fiction #BookSky #LitSky
A black-and-wite histocial photograph of American author Edith Wharton (1862–1937), celebrated historically as the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Seated in a relaxed, aristocratic pose, she leans her left elbow on a draped surface, resting her head against her hand while her right hand rests in her lap. She wears an elegant, dark Gilded Age gown featuring white off-the-shoulder lace sleeves, a ruffled white neckline, a thick pearl choker, and a long, delicate necklace. Her dark hair is styled into an elaborate, voluminous updo. Her expression is calm, intelligent, and poised. In the bottom right corner, an inset image displays a modern book cover for her famous novel, The Age of Innocence. The cover features a stark black, white, and red stylized damask pattern surrounding a vintage portrait of a woman looking over her shoulder. Bold white text reads "THE AGE OF INNOCENCE" with "Edith Wharton" written beneath it. The overall composition balances classic historical portraiture with a modern literary reference, evoking a sophisticated and intellectual mood that underscores Wharton's enduring literary legacy and sharp critique of high society.

Hi Ben, since you post about me every day and email me unsolicited even after I told you to stop, lets play a game. Every time you tweet about me, I donate $10 to a trans org. Let's call it the Benjamin Ryan youth transition fund. southernequality.app.neoncrm.com/nx/portal/fo...
A screenshot of a mobile webpage showing a donation confirmation. At the top is the logo for the "Trans Youth Emergency Project," an initiative by the Campaign for Southern Equality. Below it is a green checkmark, the amount "$10.69", and the message "Thank you for making a donation!" followed by text explaining the gift will support life-saving care for trans youth.A screenshot of a nested social media thread. At the top, user Benjamin Ryan comments that FIRE CEO Greg Lukianoff's observation about trans issues being "immediately radioactive" and a kind of "secular blasphemy" caused Harvard Law clinical instructor Alejandra Caraballo to attack him as "extremely transphobic."
Attached is a screenshot of Caraballo's post, which reads: "Here's the CEO of [FIRE] being extremely transphobic. Which side is the one criminalizing care and research? Which side is the one defunding all research? Which side is purging dissent? It ain't trans people."
Caraballo's post quotes Lukianoff's original statement, where he writes: "In my career defending academic freedom and free speech, I never saw anything become as immediately radioactive as views that ran counter to the narrative on trans issues. Papers were retracted, compelled speech was treated as normal, and people were canceled for saying things that would have sounded like common sense just a few years earlier. It seemed to become a kind of secular blasphemy overnight."

Black text on white background
“Happy Easter, New York!

Today, millions of New Yorkers celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the victory of hope over despair and faith over fear.
As the air warms and cherry blossoms begin to bloom, this holy day is a sacred time to pause and reflect on a season of rebirth.
Whether you spend this day singing in pews, parading on Fifth Avenue, joining a processional guided by the bamboo trumpets of Haitian Rara music, or hunting for painted eggs amidst the spring grass, I wish every New Yorker celebrating a joyous day.

Let us all embrace this holiday's spirit of hope and renewal as we build the City — and the world — that we deserve.”
