Our patron requested "Female villain origin stories! Myth/fantasy. Just finished I, Medusa and have Stone Blind on my list." Here, we suggest Lilith by @nikkimarmery.bsky.social. #AskALibrarian

Lilith — Multnomah County Library
Lilith — Marmery, Nikki, — In this feminist retelling of ancient creation myths, "Lilith and Adam are equal and happy in the Garden of Eden--until Adam decides Lilith should submit to his will and lie beneath him. She refuses--and is banished forever from Paradise. Demonized and sidelined, Lilith watches in fury as God creates Eve, the woman who accepts her submission. But Lilith has a secret: she has already tasted the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Endowed with wisdom, she knows why Asherah--God's wife and equal, the Queen of Heaven--is missing. Lilith has a plan: she will rescue Eve, find Asherah, restore balance to the world, and regain her rightful place in Paradise"--

A fascinating and disappointing article here. As someone who did reissue a Gertrude Trevelyan novel, I can confirm it sold pretty well. It was never going to sell millions, but it's done nicely, thank you very much. We also had inquiries from international publishers wanting translation rights.

Ironically, Lilith tells us herself what happens when you ban words: “They leap beyond those denouncing men. They soar above those who mock them from pulpits… They fly into the world and are read, discussed and debated. They reach those with open minds and breaking hearts.” 🐍🐍🐍

LILITH is a banned book - but she's used to that. She's been banned since the dawn of time for asking some VERY dangerous questions... What are you reading for #BannedBookWeek2025?

These are 2 of hundreds of 8th-7th BC terracotta goddess figures - likely Asherah, once consort of Yahweh - found from Ancient Israel and Judah. She is usually depicted with milk-heavy breasts and was probably kept in a household shrine.

Please, if you have a Labour MP, write to them & ask why they are so determined to help rich Ai companies keep secret what copyrighted work they steal from creatives to make a profit. I mean everyone write to your Labour MP cos when they destroy our income, it takes money out of your local economy.

Newman’s homage to 1984 through the eyes of Julia, Winston’s lover, adds so much to the original. We see the extra brutality the women experience: the sexual exploitation of young girls; the extraction of women’s reproductive labour; the way the Inner Party wives all seem to disappear after 30.

I stumbled across this exquisitely soulful, peaceful place while walking in the woods the other day. I sat in it and watched a robin hop around my feet. It’s the Lowna Quaker Burial Ground on the North York Moors, used between 1675 and 1854. 114 Quakers were laid to rest here. 🏺

#ReliefWednesday The Sarcophagus of Portonaccio is named after the area in which it was found in 1931 and dates to c. 180 CE. The level of detail in the battle scene is extraordinary and the subject matter has led to the theory that it was intended for an army general. #AncientBluesky🏺
The sarcophagus details Romans fighting foreign enemies with some suggestion that there are Germanic peoples involved on account of the hairstyles of some figures. Thought to have been created during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Photography credit to Jean-Pol GRANDMONT via Wikimedia Commons. The sarcophagus is held in the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Rome (Italy).
