In 1671, Friedrich Martens travelled to Svalbard and around Greenland as ship's surgeon on the 'Jonas im Walfisch' or 'Jonah in the Whale'. These engravings of a whale & fin whale are from the diary he kept, first published in 1675, where he recorded the area's flora, fauna & whaling industry.

The ‘iron house’ botanical museum used to be on Leinster Lawn and was used in the 1850s to prepare the fin whale skeleton for the Natural History Museum. In 1890 a floor of the new Museum of Science and Art on Kildare Street was given over to the botanical displays

Ironically the authors work at the museum in Philadelphia which is closing its doors next week after 200 years in the natural history business. Beautiful book by experts in their field (or should that be rockpool?)
