This is one of my biggest critiques of Elden Ring. Fort Haight is a tantalizing example of what could be — a “boss” at the top of an open air fort where the different floors interact, and interesting encounters dotting the multiple, overlapping paths to it. And the boss can fight alongside the mobs!

People looking for older stuff to try should know that Shin Megami Tensei 1 on the SFC is an anomaly in design for console RPGs of that era, like something out of the future. I’m writing something about some underdiscussed elements at the moment but for now just give it a sincere go if you haven’t.

I don't know if this is a hot take, but in both video games and TTRPGs I'm kinda tired of the "turn happens when you take it" paradigm of combat resolution. Something that was fun about Wizardry and DQ was how you didn't know how the round would actually play out. You had plans that could go awry.

Another issue with this too is that the publishers are pushing that these are morality plays in their marketing. That whole “shounen manga is friendship, effort, victory” thing comes from Shueisha. They’re asking us to treat the contents of Shounen Jump that way.
