Nick Ferran @nickferran.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Just an FYI the last consultant strike did not involve a walk out. I think (it’s quite a while ago) it was a work to rule. So none of the goodwill work that gets done every day was done. 100
Nick Ferran @nickferran.bsky.social · 06/07/2026The starting consultant salary in Ireland is €250K. 100
Nick Ferran @nickferran.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Yeah but politicians decide the size of that pie. We could have less bombs and more healthcare pie. If we wanted. It’s a choice. Not make healthcare workers fight for the pie. If you think consultants are responsible for nurse poverty in an economy our size I have a bridge to sell you. 200
Nick Ferran @nickferran.bsky.social · 06/07/2026I think billionaires making hard honest workers fight against each other for the scraps they leave behind is why we have food poverty, health poverty, etc. We will not have an NHS in the way we want it if we don’t value our workers and improve their pay & conditions and invest in infrastructure. 210
Nick Ferran @nickferran.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Yup consultants carry the can. We address the patients’ complaints, we face their families, we attend coroners. We don’t shirk responsibility. I’m not a member of a union and didn’t vote to strike so no COI. But on principle I will always support workers right to industrial action. 200
Nick Ferran @nickferran.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Because it’s not pie. There is money to pay our whole public service properly. We chose as a nation to support politicians to push austerity and put groups against each other. I’m not saying doctors are more important than nurses. We can’t make them strike. Not even same union. 100
Nick Ferran @nickferran.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Patients can potentially die if any group of healthcare workers strike. That’s always an excuse for preventing any essential services group from striking. But with previous strikes (nurses, resident doctors & consultants) teams work to support each other so patients kept as safe as possible. 100
Nick Ferran @nickferran.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Ok entitled to your opinion. But I don’t see why nurses being paid what they deserve is ok but doctors being paid what they deserve is greedy. Both go to work to treat patients. Both do so under ridiculous circumstances. 🤷🏻♂️ 100
Nick Ferran @nickferran.bsky.social · 06/07/2026They aren’t competing for money though so doctors striking don’t affect or prevent nurses striking. And if our pay rates are competitive doctors will walk. Junior doctors are already doing this. 300
Nick Ferran @nickferran.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Aren’t those two completely different things though? Where is the nursing union? If nurses voted to strike they would have the full support of the medical body and the public no doubt. As a country we can choose to pay all our healthcare workers competitively. 110
